| Clean Refurb drive? I just received my 5th refurbished Seagate 200GB hard drive. Normally all the refurbished hard drive I receive are zero'ed, but today was an exception. The hard drive I recieved contained a complete install of Windows XP. There were no major identifying files on the hard drive, except for some steam stuff. As a note I am in the process of formatting the hard drive clean. Just thought about if this had been an RMA from a major bank or something of that caliber, kinda scary ![]()

| I could have, but didn't. I figured that why break the law when I have access to free Windows keys legally.

| Ya right now I am a part of a MSDN. None of the software cost me a cent. I got XP pro, Windows Server 2k3 single user, and Office Corporate, free of charge, well not really, I had to pay for tuition for college. But the part that bugs/scares me is that I got this hard drive from a major e-tailer, and it contained data. Like I said earlier what if this hard drive had been from a major finacial institution or some other entity that has a lot of personal information, and had not been bought by someone who has a strong moral and ethical conscience.

| Seems to me if this is your 5th refurb, I'd stay away from Seagate. I'm sure if it came from them, they would have zero'd the drive. Was this from them directly, or a retailer? |

| Interesting coincidence. I bought a Seagate from CompU$A last month -- brand new, supposedly -- and when I got it home and hooked it up, I saw that it had already been formatted and named. I didn't scan for any recoverable files; just yanked it out and took it back. I can't tell whether Seagate screwed up, or whether the store got a return and decided to resell it as new. Either way, it ****** me off.

| whenever i am passed used as new, i kick up a huge stink until i get a new one. If they give me the 30% depreciation (minimum) i would take it, but i paid new, gimme new. Maybe they missed a shipment of drives, and these were in the same batch?

| kryten100, This is the 5th refurbed drive that I have bought. All of the refurbed drives are operating great. This came from a major online retailer. The drive itself works great. I am just baffled as to how this drive missed the reburb at Seagate. Actually, all of my other refurb Seagate drives ave a green border around the sticker, this one does not. hmmm:confuse2:

| "This is the 5th refurbed drive that I have bought." That makes this much more clear. I was under the impression you had returned them to Seagate for replacements, and not *purchasing* refurbed drives. Buying refurb drives from retailers...buyer beware. They may just have taken a return and boxed it back up. You don't know what you will get. The manufacturers certify the drives if you buy refurbs directly from them. |
