Converting IDE to SATA2

What problems would I have (if any) if I changed the two internal WD 250 IDE drives currently on my P4P800D to two internal WD 500 SATA2 drives?

Can I just plug the SATA2 drives in along with the IDE drives and transfer my 'C' operating system partition to a SATA2 drive partition and start booting from it? After transfering data, I plan to remove the two IDE drives.

There shouldn't be any problems, as long as you set the drives to Cable Select Mode I believe you have to do, as SATA doesn't support slave drives, and then hooke up the IDE to SATA adapter to the drive.

I've done this before and it works.

If the P4P800 has native sata,( I think it does) all you'll have to do is clone the ide drive to the sata (acronis works good for this)... If it doesn't, you need to install the sata drivers onto the ide drive before you clone it..

I think ATI was talking about the molex to sata power adapters.

The P4P800D can run up to 4 IDE channels and 2 SATA channels. The 2 SATA channels are rated to transfer 150MB/s and are on the motherboard.

At the moment, my two WD 250 hard drives are connected to the primary IDE channel. So if I add two WD SATA2 drives to the channel SATA1 and channel SATA2 onboard 150MB/s SATA connectors on the motherboard (channel SATA1 and channel SATA2 are the motherboard names for the two connectors), will all go well transfering everything from the master and slave drives on the primary IDE channel to the new drives on channel SATA1 and channel SATA2 and then booting from channel SATA1? I would imagine the WD new harddrive setup software would transfer everthing.

Any problem using a SATA2 drive (300MB/s transfer)?

Hey traveler,

The operation shouldn't be too much of an issue. If you are going to keep the install of the OS, and it is Windows XP, I'd recommend Ghosting it across with Ghost 2003 if you can. At worst you might have to boot to the recovery console and run Fixboot but as long as the partition locations aren't changed then it should be fine.

As for the SATA2 drives, they will work fine, the Seagate ones have a jumper on them. When you get a SATA2 controller you can remove the jumper and they will operate in SATA2 mode instead of SATA. I can't speak for other manufacturers at this time.

I hope this helps.

It shouldn't be a problem at all, your motherboard and the drives should auto-negotiate to the slower 150 speeds. If you don't see the drives in the bios, you will have to jumper them to 150MB/s..
I buy all my drives in blister packs , so I don't know what software boxed drives are coming with nowdays..

I've heard about a thing called buying Retail, still haven't figured out what that is.

Thanks Gorgo. Thanks 3 of 7.

Partition Magic is another way to get a new drive setup. I have Partition Magic 8. It's tested up to 300 gig drives. I think I used it on my 250 gig drives. I could try it on a 500.

Any New Hard Drive set up software is downloadable from the manufacturers website.

That jumper is collateral for SATA controllers that suck eggs. Pretty much all controllers can auto-negotiate, meaning you don't need the jumper in place at all. Only if it doesn't work is there a need to try the jumper. (Which is good, since if/when you upgrade to a SATA2-capable controller, you may forget you had the jumper and performance won't be as good as it can.)

Western Digital's SE16 Caviars have such a jumper too. Auto-negotiated with my Sil3512A controller with no problems.

I dont know about others, but I used a couple of Abit Serillel adapters for a long while and they were excellent without any problems at all. Dont know if you can still get them.

I think one can get it still ...

BUT ...

it's for plugging a IDE hard drive into a SATA motherboard!

I did not see one for plugging a SATA2 hard drive into a IDE channel.
