CUSL-2c won't find a new hd

You guys were my heroes 14 months ago when I was adding a CDRW to my friend's system. Now I need help and I return to the wise ones....

I have a CUSL2-c pIII system. When I got it, the latest and greatest BIOS was 1003. I have had NO trouble with this at all; it's been wonderfully stable. So I followed the "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" philosophy. However now I need additional hd space and have run into serious roadblocks.

The first drive I tried to install was a Maxtor Fireball 3. At first I tried installing it as a slave to my current WDC drive. Nothing. So I tried it as the master. Again nothing - except now the drive had crashed......

To the next hd...It was a WDC 200BB. I was not able to make it work either. The system simply would not find it! So....I asked a computer guy to give it a look. He was unable to make the system find ANY other hard drive than the original one, no matter how the two were jumpered. This WDC drive is now in one of his systems performing well....and I am still stuck with my (yes you may gasp) 6 GB drive.

Is this a BIOS issue? If it is please suggest the best BIOS version for me to use to attempt a flash (prayers are encouraged!). If there are other issues, PLEASE walk me through them slowly...I currently am recovering from a 2 month long bout with pneumonia and my head swims at times!

I know that with the help of all you knights in platinum armor, I will be able to resolve this problem!!! Thank you in advance.

Hi aprilynm..

I doubt it's a BIOS issue, but you could try a 'Load Setup Defaults' or short the CLRTC solder points (unplugged, battery removed) then reconfigure. Next, make sure both IDE channels are active (BIOS.. Advanced.. Chip Configuration. Page down for more entries)

You say it crashed as Master? Does BIOS recognise the drive? If both IDE channels are known active, then it's a hardware problem. (cable, jumpers, power (should spin up) etc)

Tried 40 and 80 wire cables?
