Anyway use 1006final bios or 1003final I don`t use a NIC but I`ve heard that they don`t like high PCI bus,but as you don`t OC then no problem should be present out of this. I think that you said you`ve already installed Intel Chipset Driver,is that right? Another try is to unistall its driver and then remove the device from the device manager. Then reinstall the driver as it was the first installation time.I don`t know if a NIC needs a driver or is recognised & supported already by OS (should be) or what else, but if needs then try the latest. Again ME & W2K have built in support for newer devices than 98SE has.

That's right, i'm not OC'ed and the intel chipset from the cdrom is the 1st thing i install after windows is installed. Both the d-link and linksys are not recognized in winme/98/w2k..thus they are manually installed. i flashed back to 1003, and will be doing a format.. install 98se & the intel drivers then the nic to see if it boots up normally..then i'll install the sblive and other devices afterwards... laters..

after norton ghosting, I installed the intel chipset(minus the ata controller to be able to burn), then after installing the linksys as the only installed PCI card the pause still occurs. I'm at a loss

Sorry, can`t help further on this Cause I see you tried the logical steps and I don`t have experience on NIC cards, the best way is to make a new thread about this problem.New threads are always viewed by those who know the solution or can have an idea. Post it on Installation section. I wish you get it through very soon.

I remember that when I was at Win98 (now win2000) I had delays with netbeui protocol but not with tcpip. You could check and see if there is any difference.
