| I sold my Bh6 in which MUTSUMI CR-4802TE worked flawlesly. I can burn in windows Me, W2k pro but not in windows 98/se. IN windows 98/se.... Cdrwin recognizes the cd-rw, but does nothing when i click to start burning. IT locks up but i can eject the media. Easy cd creator 95(yes OLD but damn reliable) will totally lock up when attempting to erase a cd-rw or when burning. Yet again the cd-rw is recognized tho. I dislike WinME and rather burn and play games in windows 98. If some 1 has a link or an idea on how to fix this (depending if it's a Mobo or os problem needing a 'fix') please help!!!! | Since in ME & W2K works right then check about chipset and Ultra ATA drivers in 98SE. If you have installed Ultra ATA then unistall or vice versa. Post these details about drivers on your operating systems. I think in 98 you MUST definetely install the chipset driver to work, but I have let it down after ME was released and I don`t know exactly what drivers needed. Why do you deslike ME?Everything runs smoother with it,unless you install any Intel driver!Seems MS is best on drivers!!! Last edited by patentman : 08-11-2001 at 03:09 PM. |

CUSL2-C + Mutsumi cd-rw problem Thanks for the welcome I always assumed that the cdrom/rw drivers are not loaded/installed from the asus cd, just the HD ide controller drivers can be installed. But i'm not aware if they have anything to do with the cdrom drivers that are installed by default from windows. Odd that the same win98 and burner worked on my bh6, but not on the asus. i'm leaning towards your side that it may most likely be a driver problem..as my cd-rw can read cd's but all attempts to burn fail..i even tryed direct cd and couldn't format a cdrw to packet write..but why would the same windows 98 driver work on the abit bh6 but not asus? i'm back in winMe. Backwards compatibility is my concern with WinMe. most of my software are not Me 'certified' so i find that depending on what i install...WinMe can start acting up in a few ways such as tasks not responding etc..

The reason I assumed there is a chipset and/or Ultra ATA driver problem,is that BH6 had i440BX chipset and Win98SE had a built-in support for it. On CUSL2-C there is i815EP chipset which is not supported by 98SE but is from ME&W2K. On 98SE you should install chipset driver to make use of several features to work correctly as USB and other stuff.

Try installing first chipset driver. If all are ok,then don`t install Ultra Ata driver.

I did exactly as you suggested and I can burn again in 98se by not installing the HD drivers.. Thank's alot mate! Regards.. PS: now if i can find out why all NIC cards Lags my bootup by some minutes, i'd have a perfect system. I assigned specific IRQ's..changed to non shared PCI slots..disssabled sb16 driver etc but no go..just a looooooonng pause..

I had that happen to me once. It turned out my master/slave and jumper switches were not all configured properly. After I discovered this and made the master/slave settings agree with the drive jumpers booting went fast.

Glad you fixed it! As for NIC problem,I didn`t understand well what is happening but if you think there is an IRQ conflict, then try to take off SB and if the problem is disapeared then you had/have an IRQ problem. Also try 1006final bios.I see in your profile that you use 1007,that release made in my system so many changes in IRQs that it was a total mess! 1007final get me troubles but I overcome them.I tried to dedicate IRQ5 to SB but still was no go,since I don`t use serial or parallel ports I did: Under Bios at the I/O Device Configuration made these changes in order: DISABLED DISABLED NO SWAP R/W DISABLED DISABLED DISABLED DISABLED DISABLED And at PCI/PNP IRQ Recource Exlusion set all parameters to NO. Even that my SB is in a unshared IRQ PCI slot, ports took IRQ3,5,7 and force it to take 9,10,11.Anyway unshared IRQ PCI slot means that it won`t conflict with another PCI slot, not with other features that require an IRQ. Try first taking off SB.Hope it helps.

It's finding a 1006 bios that is the challenge now. I have the 1003,1007 and the 1009c. i'm not shure wich once i sould flash to do all those bios setting changes.. i havent unpluged my sblive yet..but i'll let u guys know if removing it makes the conflict go away. I was almost considering getting a usb NIC but i have no idea if that would solve my problems.. Regards..

I removed the SBlive and i still have that dreaded pause at bootup. The only way i can bootup with no long pause is to dissable the driver in device manager. sounds like a driver issue again. it's a bran new linksys pci nic. also the dlink dfe530TX causes the same problem.. regards..

| The pause at bootup wouldn't happen to be the RAM check for the 512 mb of RAM you have, would it? It takes a while for my 512 RAM. Where in the boot sequence is "the pause"?

the pause occurs when the last of the drivers are loaded. For example if i do a selective startup, i select 'Y' for all the drivers etc..then once i select yes to load the last driver..the system pauses. When booting up as usuall, the m$ logo appears..i hit ESC to view what occurs. at this time the HD is still loading up files...then the m$ logo re-appears. i hit yet again ESC key, and i have a cursor to the top lest just blinking..and the pause lasts close to 1 minute with no hard drive access. If i dissable the driver..windows boots up as usuall with the HD light working constantly. and yes 512MB ram does make botting up a few secs longuer with the fast memory test in bios. Regards....
