Thumbs down

For some reason, neither my BIOS nor Windows 98 SE is recognizing my DVD-ROM drive. I have my IBM Deskstar 34GXP 27.3 GB ATA-66 hard drive set up as master on my primary IDE channel and my Pioneer DVD-1040 10X/40X DVD-ROM drive set up as master on my secondary IDE channel. I have installed the latest 1006 BIOS. I have triple-checked cable orientation, power plug settings, jumper settings, etc. The strange thing is that this EXACT same DVD-ROM and EXACT same IDE cable worked perfectly in my ASUSTeK K7V motherboard I sold a week ago. The drive has power and the door can open and close, it is just that is doesn't recognize any CD's so I can't install the Intel chipset drivers. Even in my BIOS, my secondary IDE channel is listed as NONE. Any help would be appreciated.

Make sure that you have not bent a pin in the secondary connector or on the DVD ROM Drive.

I feel that you should have ACPI installed too.

Did it work with BIOS 1003?? Old axiom: If it ain't broke don't fix it.

Just a thought.

Good Luck!

Set the DVD ROM as the primary slave since win98 won't recognise second IDE channel _before_ inf update. Or, find another means to get the update to HDD, say via floppies

Should've pointed that out in the manual, if you ask me. Greedy bunch. Someone please check whether this problem persists with their new jewel, that is, pearl ;))

Question

Okay, since I can copy the Intel inf files to a floppy, tell me is this procedure would be correct:

Set hard drive as master on primary IDE channel
Set DVD-ROM as master on secondary IDE channel
Do a clean install of Windows 98 SE
After that, install the Intel chipset drivers from the floppy
Windows should now recognize the DVD-ROM?

I read about this solution before but I thought it didn't apply to my situation because both Windows -and- my BIOS are not recognizing the DVD-ROM. Will installing the Intel inf drivers allow the BIOS to detect the DVD-ROM to? Thanks for the help.

Ooops... missed that little sentence in the end, sorry. Win98 won't recognize secondary master regardless, but the BIOS prob is worse. Does the bios say "none" after trying to autodetect your DVD-ROM? Try connecting it to different positions on different cables and checking with the relevant device in BIOS setup. That is, change into the corresponding submenu and try auto and dvd-rom (might read cd-rom) settings.

Yeah, under my secondary primary device in my BIOS, it says NONE. I tried switching it to CD-ROM and then booting into Windows 98 SE but it didn't do anything.

Ok, but to overcome the BIOS prob you won't need windows. Well, having the inf update installed won't hurt, and might even do a miracle - getting the DVD recognised under windows (try rebooting a few times afterwards), but I conservatively believe you NEED the BIOS approval prior to anything. You'll not know you are in deep trouble before the bios fails to recognise the DVD set up as a primary slave, however. You may also want to try investigating the issue from Pioneer side, e.g. their known issues and all

Klesk2000, what about a different bios either up-grade or flash back to say 1003 final! It most likely is a bios thing, if all the cables are correct. Also if you didn't install the INF drivers first thing after installing windows or have not installed them at all. You are going to have BIG PROBLEMS, you need these drivers to recognize all your devices. I would do a new install of OS. Then Install INF drivers first thing after install. Then if you still have IDE problems or any others I would upgrade bios or flash back to 1003 final.
