| Hi all, I've got Win2K installed on a Quantum Fireball lct 15 20 (UDMA4 20 GB) disk, partitioned in 5 GB and 15 GB. 5 GB hosts Win2K and 15 GB is for data. Everytime I run chkdsk on the 15 GB partition, I get lots of lost chains, bad clusters (not bad sectors) and so on. Performing a full disk format under any OS reports disk is perfectly good. Config is BIOS 1006 Final, PIII 733, no overclocking, 128 MB, latest Intel UltraATA drivers installed. Any ideas??? Thx... |

| You may not like my answer - but - here goes. Get rid of your partitions and make your HD into just one drive. I tried this partition trick and had nothing but troubles (IBM DTLA 30GB ATA 100) After redoing to no partitions = no problems = me happy. Just a thought. Good Luck! |

| I don't think getting rid of partitions is the way to solve problems. I (and a lot of other ppl) are running a dual-boot system and have no problems. There is absolutely nothing against using multiple partitions. I would dump the ATA drivers. You don't need them since you are running your drive in UDMA 4 mode. Getting fragmentation that heavily could mean your drive is about to break down. Make sure you backup your data! For now that is the only advice I can give you. How about the latest Intel INF drivers???

| Check me if I am wrong! If you are running a dual-boot system that is what you have to do. **** BUT **** jba, did not say he had a dual boot system. There for I offered him an easy solution. In the end it is up to him. I like the Intel Ultra ATA drivers but I am using W98se. To each his own. Good Luck! [Edited by topazal on 03-23-2001 at 04:38 AM] |

| You're right. I misread his post. Thought he had a dual-boot system. Still doesn't change the way I feel about things... Getting data corruption every single time is not normal and I've always been using multiple partitions with whatever config I'm running (single W98SE, dual-boot, etc..) and never had a problem. This is either W2K, driver or HD related. My guess is his HD is about to fail.
