Data Recovery After Installation of New OS

A friend installed WIN XP from Win2K. It was not an uprade but a clean install with a format of the HDD. Unfortunately, they forgot to copy a business critical Excel file. Is there any software that can recover data after a HDD format?

Thanks.

I did this a few years ago. I googled file recovery software and was successfully able to recover most of my data using a demo. Sorry, I don't know which package, but it can be done.

You do have the risk that the data has been overwritten and you are out of luck.

I agree with Rick_ee it depends where the data from the new install went and whether what other software was installed before you noticed the files weren't there.

My guess is you installed all the software before you notice the excel files were gone. Unless you have backup I think recover is nill.

You can give it try nothing to loose but time.

Thanks for the responses, Rick_EE and rjs735. I downloaded some data recovery demos and I will try them today. If I find one that works I'll post it under the cool utilities thread.
