Based on some prior postings (and a problem with my DVD drive), I ran the following benchmarks under HD TACH. The first is with the Intel Beta 2 drivers, then with no drivers other than what Windows '98SE installs when you remove the intel drivers, and then just with DMA.

The following are two different drives, and the Max Read Speed/Min/Avg Read Speed/CPU Util

IBM 30GB 75GXP ATA100

Intel Beta 2 Drivers - 39733/24490/34915/18.0%
Nothing - 8028/6980/7913.4/96.2%
DMA- 38413/19252/34509/6.0%

WD 20GB ATA-66

Intel Beta 2 Drivers - 24775/17097/23657/5.5%
Nothing - 6767/5821/6610/80.8%
DMA - 24766/16672/23714/4.6%

(Sorry - i had it as a chart, but the system didn't keep the formatting)

It appears that DMA is only marginally worse in terms of speed, and infintely better in terms of CPU. Which should I do? Is DMA harmful?

Thanks!

Use the DMA setting if the drive utilizes it OK.
Although your benchmark might show DMA as the lower performer, it's still just a benchmark.

The lower cpu utilization gives the cpu back more and faster than the other modes do...so....
