Drive reading DVD as CD

G'day all. First off, I haven't been here for a while, and so this is the first time I've seen the new and improved redesign of the site. Great look!

Ok, my problem is when I insert a blank DVD into my drive, it reads it as a CD that is full. I am using the same brand DVD's I always have, and have never had a problem with. Previously to this I was attempting to author a Video DVD using Nero Vision Express 3, when it had a hissy fit and froze on me. I was unable to shut down my pc the normal way (also tried task manager), and so had to shut down 'cold turkey' (held in the power button till it went off!). So maybe that has corrupted something with XP.

My specs are...

Windows XP Home SP2
Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-105
AMD Athlon XP 3200+ 2200 MHz
ASUS Tek A7V600
512 MB DDR Ram

When I start up Nero's CD-DVD Speed tool, it recognises the DVD correctly, and that it is empty.

Now, I'm not that knowledgable, so please go easy on the pc speak. .... thanks guys...

Michaela

I have seen some strange anomalies with XP even with SP2 on the system. I have 2 dvd-rw on my system some times I put a dvd in and I can't see or read the cd ( this not one I burned but a commercial one ). I reboot the system leaving the dvd in the drive and it's there and works fine after that.

In your case I sould try the benign things first like Uninstall Nero and reinstall. Delete the drive from device manager and allow a redetect of the hardware. Roll back the drive for the Pioneer Cd drive.

I tend to think one of the above should fix your problem.

Thanks for your help. Strangely enough, it's stopped giving me trouble. Maybe something in the windows update sorted it.

Ok buddy,

Cheers,

Me

There were some fixes that applied to cdrw stemming probably from the fact that MS wants to take over evrything in sight that is add on software to their OS. They want either to buy out or put everyone else out of business. SO when that's accomplished you can only go to one source MS. I hope that dy never comes. I am up to my ears in MS already.

lol Rjs..... Well, I wouldn't mind that so much.....if MS actually did a good job with their software! I mean, who else can get away with selling a product which, once you get it home and put it through its paces, you find to have consistent faults, with no chance for a refund!....lol.

Cheers you,

Me

I hear you. Unfortunately I can tell you this is somewhat of a carry over from the Mainframe arena ( where I worlkd for some 30 yrs) and it's even more prevasive in the PC arena no matter how hard you try to test the product there are just too many environments that differ with the mix of software and hardware that may create problems. They just can't al be replicated.

So your always left with some problems. Your best test is the user live test but that has it's own problems . Like end user opnion and word of mouth and bad press.

I was tongue in cheek saying that MS does a good job and with them destroying competition you will never get best of breed just mediocre which we already have.
