DVD Burner not recognizing blank CD-R's

I own a NEC 3540 with latest official firmware, and it's been giving me problems for the past few months now where it won't allow me to burn any blank CD-R's that I've tried. It records on DVD-R's just fine though. Whenever I insert a blank CD-R (tried about 5-7 different brands ... cheap and high quality), and each time the light comes on, it makes a spin up sound, and then nothing happens and the light turns off. Anyone know if there's a way to fix it or should I chuck this thing out and buy a new burner?

Tried the drive with Windows XP SP2, also Intel INF drivers, and Vista Business 32 bit. As for software - Nero 6, 7, DeepBurner, and a few other freeware/shareware applications. None show the CD-R's.

yeah, definitely sounds broken. I'd also advice to rma it. But maybe you should test the drive in another PC. Sometimes (although i admit its very rare) some drives don't work in your PC but work flawlessly in someone else's pc (happened to me with an LG 16x burner)

Termite, have you tried using a standard Cleaning CD (like those that have a small line of tiny brushes "implanted" on)?

When one denies something, this means that's the something to believe?
