I have a Pionees 16x slot DVD and it is fairly noise, but I guess you have to expect that from a fast drive, especially if its a slot drive. Other than the noise its a great drive.

The reason I am considering this drive though is because it is only 40X CD-ROM and I thought that it would be quieter. Is this true?

Talking Acceptable DVD Drives

Be SURE you select a DVD that is capable of UDMA. Otherwise it will not be good only as a CD. The 815EP only works with DVD's that go UDMA.

You cannot bypass this by changing OS's, drivers, etc. since it is determined in the bios during boot.
