Incredibly good news. The MPAA can't be happy about this.

I guess I missed something even though this trial has been going on for some time. Although I am 100% against illegal copies, warez, etc., I do not understand why it is wrong for a guy to write code so he can watch DVDs on his Linux machine instead of buying a DVD player. If someone can make me a little wiser, I would appreciate it.

Good. The ruling says when you buy a disk you own it as your property.

I believe it's only wrong in the eyes of the entertainment industry. Right now, software that allows DVD playback on a computer is provided by companies who have paid a licensing fee for using the decryption method. Also, something that came out in the trial was that the MPAA has not problem with DVD playback on "approved" devices. "Approved" meaning, those devices from companies that have paid the licensing fees.

Since the DeCSS code/program addressed in the trial is homegrown, there were no licensing fees paid, which is a sore spot for the MPAA/Entertainment Industry... all together now...

One thing to keep in mind is that this ruling was in Norway only. While it would be nice to believe that this precedent will influence future cases in other countries, I don't think we can count too heavily on that happening - especially on the MPAA's home turf.
