Re: Dying 150GB Raptor?

I've had it installed since July 19 and still no DOD... All 4 of my drives show "Good" and I reboot at least once per day.

Count your blessings there. ActiveSmart, it seems, is not detecting any downward trend in the SMART indicators at this time.

Put in a known "bad" hard drive and see what happens.

I installed ActiveSmart to check on one of my drives and I knew that the drive was already bad. My BIOS said that SMART failed on that drive about fifty percent of the time whenever I booted up. Of course the drive worked fine after booting. ActiveSmart predicted the drive would live for about another 6 months. And it was right. Drive froze two weeks after the date ActiveSmart predicted would be the DOD.

So, no downward trend, no DOD. Makes sense. Thanks for the update Traveler.

1 week left in my free 1 month trial...I'm pretty sure now that if the drive being tested is in excellent/good health then it will not give any info on 'Estimated Lifetime' as it would be too hard to predict...only works with failing drives, very old drives or drives in poor health...my drive is literally 4 months old and 'New' not 'Refurbished' so I don't forsee any issues

Probably not.

When the SMART indicators said "bad" in the BIOS for me, the DOD predicted for me was a few months off. And I used that drive right up to the DOD, taking extra precautionary backup measures on it.

I found a new hard drive utility which I really like a lot...it's called HDD Health...HDD Health is a full-featured failure-prediction software program...it's currently in beta but the program really is very nice...shows every last detail about your hard drive--including temps, SMART settings, advanced settings and overall health

a tab named "Partitions" will even display some detailed information about the partitions that are currently residing on the selected drive, while a modified progress bar in the lower part of the window shows the amount of free space for every partition

Active Smart is a good program but HDD Health looks a bit better to me...seems to show more detailed hard drive settings as well...it's also freeware...give it a try

Flash File Recovery download flash recovery software for Windows

**scroll down to the bottom of the page for the HDD Health program

another great thing about HDD Health is that it barely uses any system resources...when running in the background it only uses about 3MB of random access memory

Thanks for the link.

A little OT, but when you said only 3md, I thought about my 80286 that was kicking - 640kb of memory. Then I supped it up with a 20mb external HD.
