A vista update was screwing up your harddrive?

Re: Dying 150GB Raptor?

You might want to re-check your SMART data. It's possible that if you reformatted prior to installing Vista, bad sectors on the hd were detected and marked as not to be used. See if the SMART parameter called "reallocated sector count" is 0 (hopefully) or some other value.

Glad it's working ok!

Re: Dying 150GB Raptor?

I have a WD 150GB raptor that had some nasty issues with boot "read errors" and loads of smart errors...out of the blue.

Had recently updated the bois for other issues prior to these problems.

You might want to go over some of your settings within the bios.
Particularly, legacy vs native support.

How many times have you rebooted during the past week and a half?

quite a few...I don't usually leave my system on 24/7...I like to shut it off if I know I'm not going to be using it for awhile (like when I go to work)

does it have to be on for 5-7 days straight in order for the information to be collected?

Actually I don't remember.

My computers are on 24/7.

When I first installed ActiveSmart, I was interested only in the live changing SMART indicators and readings. My BIOS, at bootup, was giving me BAD SMART warnings when the BIOS was detecting the drives.

So I was watching the live realtime SMART indicators in ActiveSMART for at least a week or more. Then all of a sudden the "collecting data" thing, which I really paid no attention to and thought only meant collecting info for SMART, suddenly changed and was replaced by a predicted hard drive faikure date.

And that date was accurate to within less than a month, more precisely: two weeks after the predicted date the drive failed. Of course the drive was properly backed up and there was no data loss, but that impressed me. Whatever formula the author wrote using the SMART data as a basis for prediction worked. Somewhere on his website he talks about using the changes in temperature, changes in acceleration time to spin up, etc. as a basis for the prediction.

Also somewhere on his site he talks about how long it takes to gather the data needed to base a prediction.

Re: Dying 150GB Raptor?

Maybe the trial version takes longer to figure this out?

I'd bet on Deathstars failing even before it can calculate this information ...

There's no difference between the full version and the 30 day trial version.

As I said above, poof, it was just there one day. Never paid attention to exactly when. 2 weeks, three weeks, ... but definitely before the 30 days passed.

yup

either way the overall health of my drives is showing up as very good so that's all that really matters...it would have been nice to have a predicted date but I can't see it being anytime soon...the 'Disk Health' and 'Performance' bars are pretty much filled all the way

maybe it predicts a date only if your hard drive is in bad shape or almost ready to die

It predicts the DOD using the trend of the SMART readings over time. Apparently none of your SMART indicators are trending downward so it seems.
