| Failing hard drive I was given a gateway computer to work on and it seems to be having a hard drive problem. Soon as i boot i get a SMART error (HDD Bad, backup and replace). Im trying to find software that i mite be able to some how fix the hard drive. I went to westerndigital site and got the latest copy of Data Lifeguard but that is a total pos. You cant check the status of the drive or format it with this software. Im not sure whats out there that i can use.

| Re: Failing hard drive Any reason you want to salvage this HDD other than for data recovery? If you are getting a SMART ERROR I'd toss it. You could run HDAT2 on that drive LINK

| Re: Failing hard drive You need to dwnld the other diagnostic progs from WDC. The datalifeguard is ok as far as it goes but you need the DOS diagnostic progs.

| Re: Failing hard drive I used the tools in xp and it fixed the drive right up. The smart error went up and system is back up and running.

| Re: Failing hard drive You might also want to try running "Spin Rite" on it in "maintenance mode". I've heard of folks having good results from useing this. See grc.com |

| Re: Failing hard drive The HDD has had a problem and its not reliable. Even if the SMART errors were flushed and it appears to be working fine now, it doesnt mean its going to last long. So to avoid data loss and headaches, replace the HDD with a new one. They are very cheap these days
