Final question abput 2.5" hard drives

I'm looking to upgrade someones drive from a 4200 to 5400 drive. I have either a

Toshiba MK4026GAX 40GB http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822149015

OR

Hitachi 5K100 40GB http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822146041 in mind.

I was ready to get the Hitachi but read it might be loud, but can be quieted with their sound management software. Which one does anybody recommend?

I have used both MFGS. AS far as loud it's tought to hear I've used them in laptops. I would go with the 5400 rpm as it will perform faster. I might suggest getting the largest cache you can afford, these are 8 and even 16mb. This will move data faster also.

I have a client using an 80gb Toshiba 5400 rpm as an external drive for backups.

They are generally both good HDS. The 2.5 market has been the pervue of mostly IBM, now owned by Hitachi and Toshiba. WD has now a 2.5 line called scorpio but have no experiemce.

I read one website (http://hddguru.com/en/index.php?opti...d=22&Itemid=29) that painted a frightful picture for Hitachi, Toshiba and Fujitsu about physical defects that may occur. Also that Seagate had MBR related problems.

I've also seen some people reporting that Toshiba drives die out quickly. So, considering this, and taking into account where the hard drive lies in relation to the P4 2.0A GHz (Northwood) CPU inside the person's laptop, I think I'm going with the Hitachi drive. Then if I need to, I'll use the acoustic management to make it quiet. BTW, this is a Christmas present, so I need to order it today from Newegg.

As you well know when dealing with hardware the mpg is dependednt on the user. What I am saying is harware is prone to failure. You do the research and pick the one you think is best. Regardless what other people say the final descision is your money and your luck as it were.

I am sure your experience will be good. The mtf that is usually post by MFGs is kinda like the mpg advertised by the big 3. You may get better some may get worse. The avg is the avg.

Happy holidays. Whoever gets it will be happy I am sure. The rest is Fate/Karma whatever you believe in.
