Floppy Drive does not work in XP Pro, I/O error?

My floppy drive shows up in the device manager and in the explorer window but I cannot view any data on a floppy or any type of r/w activity. This only became a problem just this weekend. I tried a bootdisk and it worked beautifully when booting up the computer but in Windows XP Pro, forget it-I/O error. This is on my P4S8x (a SiS648 chipset), all the latest device drivers are installed on the OS.

Any ideas with what conflicts can occur to cause this problem in Windows XP Pro? Or whatever the problem is.

Not sure if it`s related in any way, but i have a similar problem with my setup.
Made a thread about it some time ago.
For me the problem seems to appear after my Live! gets its drivers installed in the OS. (both XP and 9X)
One of the new devicedrivers you installed might be causing the problem.

Are you able to try the floppy in another computer to make sure it did not, in fact, die?

Did you try to remove it and let Window "find new hardware" again to see if it came back?

Just a couple of quick random thought.

I have built two boxes that the floppy was killed when I installed xp. Maybe this is all tied together or something

I have a similar problem I just thought my floppy had died. maybe I'll do some more exploring before I get rid of it.

Thanks for the responses. It is highly unlikely that the floppy is dead because I can boot up Partition Magic disks. However, if in Windows XP the very same diskettes cannot be read. No Creative Labs drivers whatsoever on this box-so I can't count that either. I will probably try a different floppy; however, this is a six month old drive and it does not makes sense to only not work in Windows XP.

Hmmm, I will definitely have to try some other tests. I unfortunately will not be able to test till much later this week, mainly due to the holiday and other demands.

I solved the problem. It was the bios. I'm one of the unfortunate ones that has the dreaded P4S8x and I tried DDR433 RAM on it. In the process, my board which was extremely stable with bios 1003A had to be bumped up to the bios that would handle faster RAM - this failed but I kept the bios on 1004 for a little just in case I wanted to try the RAM again. Then I finally tried the 1005.006 beta bios. Well, I'm back to the 1003A bios (I'm one of the few lucky ones that can use this bios and have a stable board) and the floppy now works in Windows XP Pro.

Yeah, unfortunately my 8x card cannot complete a 3DMark now. Soooo, the P4S8x and the A7V8x will be swapping hardware sometime today.

The A7V8x uses the my DDR433; the P4S8x does not.
The A7V8x can use the 8x card; the P4S8x now does not.
The A7V8x has proven to be stable; the P4S8x is questionable.

The P4S8x was a $150 mistake.

I'm glad I got my P4S533 when it was the newest at the time. Nice and stable, never problems like that.
