Good times

I think my drive just died. My 500GB WD.

Linux threw up a "drive is full" message all of a sudden. I/O error when I tried to cd to the mounted directory. The controller shows up at boot (doesn't list the drive), but Windows startup freezes (I did a hard reset after 15 seconds, it might finish after a while I dunno), Linux works, but it retries a bunch of times to connect to the SATA device with no luck and just gives up.

Peachy. No backups of course, but nothing really vital on the thing either (mostly downloaded stuff of highly questionable legality). I'm burning the important stuff on my old Samsung drive ASAP, that's for sure.

A cable coming loose seems unlikely. Haven't cracked the case yet, I hate that crap.

I really hate computers y'know...

Re: Good times

At least you didn't have any pictures that would irreplaceable on it. Any immoral, illegal, or just plain disgusting downloads you can always download again. Does sound like the drive, but you don't need me to tell you that. Unfortunately with advanced users, it's kinda rare that someone would know better from afar then you sitting right there. I'm sure trying the drive in another machine has already occurred to you for example.

Computers do kinda suck don't they...

Re: Good times

Only have the one machine. But I figure it's toast as it is now. No biggie, really. Just a bit of venting goin' on.

May throw it in the freezer to see if that does anything. I hear that's popular among the kids these days. Yesterday a fresh batch of meatballs. Today a hard drive. That's the 21st century for you.

I haven't had any drives fail on me yet (knock on wood) but I have had lots of hardware fail it seems. A motherboard recently for example. I still have a few AMD XP machine running almost constantly with no problems for over 5 years one of them..

Re: Good times

I have no idea. I got this one about a year ago. Had me a 75GXP that went south but that drive family was *special* to begin with.

My Samsung P80 has been going strong for 4+ years. I really should back the important stuff up more often. Heh. Live and learn, I guess.

Re: Good times

May order two 250GB drives or something and RAID1 those suckers, I think my Tweex controller card does RAID1. Only had the 500GB one less than half full anyway, and lots of crap on it too.

RAID1/5/6 is the future for disk-based storage, I'm telling you. I can easily see a product that fits in a 5.25" slot, with 2-4 notebook drives, a RAID controller and some fancy ion wind cooling thingie with just a single SATA data connector. Remove it, slip some sort of pretty case on it and use it as an eSATA drive. Bob's your uncle.

Seems like anything over 320gb has a very high failure rate. Mostly do to heat. I have 3x 320 seagates and 2x 500 wds in my server and so far so good no problems.

Re: Good times

I have to say, now after a couple hours without the WD drive, that some slowdowns I was noticing earlier are gone. I attributed that to a slow computer and Firefox acting up (it has done so before). May have been the drive acting weird and wonky.

Ah well.

Re: Good times

Wow, yeah, almost what I want. It should ideally house a controller as well, making it do RAID while looking like a single drive to the computer. (Completely avoiding the need for RAID drivers and stuff like that.)

I'm brainstorming, basically. Heh.

Re: Good times

I like the idea.

I am still running my p4c-800E dlx. When I first set it up, I had my OS and programs on a RAID-0 and "My Documents" with all my data on a RAID 1.

One of my fears is that with the MOBO based raid setups is that if the board fails, I won't be able to set up the Raids again with a new board.

About a 2 months ago one of the HD's in the RAID 0 failed. Talk about a PITA. I also added a cooling fan to each replacement drive.

Re: Good times

This is a constructive thread, since I'm planning on putting my systems on a domain (w/Win2k8 RCO) - I figure I better have backup in case the domain gets borked and locks me out of my desktops. Now I'm thinking this is more urgent in light of your problems.

Would be the smart thing to do.

Re: Good times

Your 500GB should have S.M.A.R.T. capability. This will warn you if your drive is headed south or maybe it can even confirm it is bad. My BIOS enables this tech. and I use it.
