Hard Drive Diagnostic Tools Reference

I made this list in a thread under the Win2k/XP part of the forum. I thought it would be appropriate and handy to re-post it here, as this probably is one of the first places one looks in case of HD problems.

HDD Manufacturers With Diagnostic Tools:

IBM has sold the hard drive part of their business to Hitachi, the new company is called Hitachi Global Storage Technologies. The utilities for the Travelstar, Deskstar and Ultrastar hard drives are available here:

If it's a Seagate drive, try their SeaTools Disc Diagnostic, available here:

Maxtor has their own tool, called Powermax. Download it here:

Quantum was bought by Maxtor a while back, and Maxtor's utility (Powermax) now works instead of the older QDPS.

Western Digital also has a suite of tools, called Data Lifeguard Tools. Get info about/download it here:

HDD Manufacturers Without Diagnostic Tools:

As mentioned above, Hitachi has bought out the hard drive business from IBM. The older hard drives, manufactured by Hitachi still doesn't seem to have any specific diagnostic tools available. The new storage website is located here:

If you own a Toshiba drive, there are no disk drive utilities available either. The Toshiba storage website, however, is here:

LaCie only provides drivers for their portable HDDs. The downloads webpage is this one:

[Links updated and verified on September 22nd, 2004]

If you use NTFS, some of the utilities above may not work. There could also be different ones for SCSI and IDE drives. Read carefully before using any of them.

Not a bad idea at all, there would be too many stickys otherwise. Antoher name might be Essentials, sort of sums it up, but may be too vague. (Heheh, contradicting myself...I have got to put my second personality to sleep for the night

GREAT post there, kONGO! Saved this one to a file... I love "one-stop-shopping" for diagnostic tools! BTW Ozzie, 'bout done with a detailed piece on RAID 0/Promise FastTrak, if-and-when you're interested... Also, DMA got me going with the DigiDoc thing...and I think I've come up with a way to use its temp probes to control a dual-speed fan setup automatically! I'll post the details once I've got it running (parts are on order).

Way to go SKI - that would be VERY helpfull for those setting up raids - not only on the CUSL2, but across platforms as well.
We'll make sure it's well preserved.

I'm almost ready to give it a go on my CUSL2 - done with the schoolwork on it now and deleted it. ATTO scores suck - it needs help...

That DIGI DOC sures looks like a nice unit...been thinking about one of those for a while...

Thanking to information posted by kONGO "the Viking" , I had opportunity to test IBM's New Tool as below;

1) Go to http://www.storage.ibm.com/hdd/support/download.htm

2) Scroll down the web page, and find out "IBM Feature Tool(version 1.30)" - Updated

3) Download the tool and try it if you own IBM harddrives.
Also pay attention to the Userguide.pdf.

See Page 17 of 18.

"This new feature tool shows your drive's current TEMPERATURE in Celcius and/or Farenheit..."

The tool works flawlessly on my CUSL2 box with 2 x 20GB 75GXP, 1 x 45GB 75GXP harddrives. The software tool measures your IBM drive's TEMPERATURE.
