harddrive limiting

what limits the maximum harddrive size (in GB) in computers. Why can't I put my 120GB harddrive that's in my P4T-E into my older P2B? Is this a bios problem or something? Is there anything that can be done to maximize this limit. I have a 60 GB that works in my P2B but I don't think anything bigger sees the drive.

If this is true, you can get around the bios limitation by using a PCI IDE controller card.

Here's some reading material for you Tommy..

http://www.pcguide.com/ref/hdd/bios/size_GB8.htm

Left panel on the bottom explains the limitations. All starts with the INT13 interface and extensions.

excellent guide dddibley. this site is packed with good info. what i don't see though is the limit that i hit. i put in a 65GB hard disk. it worked fine . that means that i passed The 65,536 Cylinder (31.5 GiB / 33.8 GB) Barrier. the next barrier is the The ATA Interface Limit (128 GiB / 137 GB) Barrier. my 65 GB would work, but my 120GB wouldn't work . 120GB<137GB. i understand much more now, but it still doesn't make sense

Could be the 65GB on your old box is using a 'driver' to fool the BIOS. Most current drives come with this type of install utility. eg. Maxtor has MaxBlast II, WD has EZ-Drive.

I've seen a few references to programs that enable support for drives larger than 64GB in Win9x systems. Might even be a BIOS limitation too. Check your HDD manufacturer for more info
