Has anyone heard of the Sony DW-U10A

I found a place online that is selling them and they expect delivery next week.

They claim this DVD-RW is the successor to the DRU 500a. That it burns at 4 x.

here is what is on their website:

Sony DW-U10A replacement of DRU500A DVD Burner, DVD+R/RW/-R/RW/CD-R/RW Drive (Recorder)

Pre Order Product will be available by Next Week.

This is the First 4X DVD+R & 4X DVD-R Burner.

Sony DW-U10A the Replacement of DRU500A DVD Burner DVD+R/RW/-R/RW/CD-R/RW Drive (Recorder)

Overview

Sony takes the risk out of buying a DVD recorder by bringing all the popular formats into a single drive. The amazing new DW-U10A Replacement of DRU-500A burns DVD-R/-RW, DVD+RW/+R, and even CD-R/CD-RW discs.

* Internal EIDE drive includes an impressive, industry standard software bundle and is compatible with Windows?98SE/2000, Windows ME and Windows XP operating systems.

* DVD+RW and DVD-RW discs recorded on this drive may not play back on some older or entry-level DVD systems. The write-once DVD+R or DVD-R discs are more compatible for interchange with other DVD systems.

Please record responsibly. Before copying anything onto a CD-R, CD-RW, DVD+R or DVD+RW, please be sure you are not violating copyright laws.

......

now, is this legit? Has anyone heard of this DVD drive? Its not a USB drive I hope

any information would be greatly appreciated as I am considering cancelling my order for the DRu 500a and ordering this.

Tam

Did I like, do something to offend everyone?

It's like nobody ever even reads what I write here anymore.

okay .. to continue....

I need someone's help. I am confused.. TIGERDIRECT says that they have the sony dru 500a IN STOCK on their website....

SHOULD I TRUST THEM? I have the drive on order at Zones.com but they have yet to ship my drive, and they are on backorder. They keep saying "tomrorow, tomorrow" but I saw Annie 42 times and I'm sick of it.

I don't know whether to cancel my order with Zones and go with TIGERDIRECT. Has anyone used them? They scare me for some reason.

Or should I just go for the new Sony u10 thngie that is supposed to replace the 500a?

I am CONFUSED AND I NEED HELP

I never saw this first one, but its funny what you said about TigerDirect. I've never used them either and for the same reason. I just always had a bad feeling about them.

I never tried Zones.com either though.

HI KT

AT LAST!!

its been so long since anybody answered anything I wrote. Maybe they're confused by the BOOPBOOPDEBOOP thing

burnworld has a link on their website that says "buy at tiger direct" underneath their review of the Sony dru 500a ......so I am wondering........... should I?

I am so afraid that I will order and as soon as I click that SUBMIT button I'll get a message that says BACKORDERED!

Maybe call asd ask first. Their 1800 number is right on their front page of the website.
1-800-800-8300

Just a thought. I'd hate to hit submit and get 'backordered' too.

The specs are identical to the DRU500A. I wouldn't cancel my order. I am little suspicious, because there is almost no information available about that drive, only in japanese that I can't read.
Stick with your order.

Thanks Swannie

I like it when a guy is decisive I can't make decisions and my boyfriend is busy tonight so you have to be his stand-in

You say the specs are the same?

I am so glad you took a look I will do as you say and just order from tigerdirect even though they charge SALES TAX here in florida!

I believe that's just an early name for the DRU-500A, not a replacement drive. Everything I've found points to that.

I'd rather wait for other vendors.

Circuit City should have it as well for $350. Makes it easier when you have a problem.

Hi Tam...

Just a few thoughts here. The DRU-500a is probably the most popular piece of hardware Sony has come up with in a long time. Best Buy gets them and sells them out in one day. So does CompUSA. I have a friend at CDW in Chicago...and last I talked to him...they had them in stock. If you want his number, PM me and I'll pass it along. Also...I bought mine at, are you ready for this, Office Depot. Best Buy had em on sale one week for $349 with a $50 rebate...well it seems that the rebate was a Sony rebate and was good for Best Buy, CompUSA, Office Depot and a few more vendors. Well...long story short...Best Buy had none...and Office Depot always has them priced at $379...so they sit there. Fortunately...Office Depot price matches...and all you have to do is tell them Best Buy's or CompUSA's price...$349 and they might call...but the price is easily verifiable. Anyway...I just got a notice from Sony that the rebate was received and should be processed soon. Here is the address for the rebate...good through 1/31/03

www.getmeadeal.com/rebates/sonydru500a_JAN31.htm

Good Luck

Bob

BTW...with firmware 1.0f...the DRU500A burns at the following speeds:

DVD-R 4X
DVD+R 4X
DVD-RW 2.4X
DVD+R 2x
