hdd set to dma 0 in xp

i'm not quite sure what is going on,
one of my two hard drives is being put into dma mode 0 from dma mode 5 if i try to copy a file to that drive. my other drive stays at dma 6. (the raptor) both are sata drives.

i think it may be starforce, as many people say it can cause windows to do that. but i have no proof apart from just installing several new starforce games.

s.m.a.r.t. shows no problems at all
windows chkdsk /f has no problems
wd data lifeguard shows no problems
etc...

i'm almost sure it's not a hdd problem, but rather a software one. the only reason i'm confused is because it also happens in my "clean" xp boot, since i dual boot. so if it was a registry or windows specific problem the i don't think it should happen in another windows that has nothing installed. not even sound drivers.
