1st off, there is no valueable data persay. My low motivated son "said" he had saved his assignment which was very involved but the system crashed so he needs a "note" for class today... He could be just giving me a line of crap, for that matter! As far as hdd- don't know how Dell had set it up (fat or ntfs) machine is 2 yrs.old w/XP home. I'm currently freeing up a replacement Pata for disk 0 and will not format the original Sata yet. I have no easy way to view this drive (Sata) so I have to install a Pata and OS first to view. I temp. used my 300Gb Pata from my enclosure but since have removed for a more permanet drive for now

The easiest way would be to research the model at Dell's support site.

Given your situation to be on the safe side. I would run a full set of diags from Seagate on the drive. I would hate to see you reinstall and then die on you a couple of days down the road. But like you I suspect your son may have as much to do with the drive failure as you suspect.

He could easily have started a format and aborted and then reboot and lo and behold "Hey Dad my hard drive is dead". Don't know.

After a clean diag run then re format and reinstall Xp if you want all the software that shipped from Dell then you need the Dell Cds. Don't forget to run MS update to get SP2 installed ( assume you have a HS internet connect) if not then ther are other ways.

Thanks for the replys, I ended up just installing another hdd I had and reinstalled all the programs etc. for now. I guess it just shows again just how important it is to backup! No big loss this time, but what about next time? I'm just going to take it easy now!Wgew, what a job, I also redid my P3 completely today cause the other one (daughter) and her friends got that one a nasty virus Now all the machines are "tuned" till next time
