| help me fix my floppy drive ! OKay, so my psu went bang and I had to replace it. I got 500w ultra x connect and decided to get a new case too - a silverstone LC 13. At the same time I replaced my exsting floppy drive with a Misumi 7 in 1. I connected eveything up without the drives being in their bays just to check all woudl work - everything fine including the floppy. Then I had to spend hours trying to cram everythiing in the case (those cables on the psu are so inflexible) - lots of unplugging an re-plugging cables. Once I had succeed all was fine except the light on the floppy drive is on permanetly - so iI plugged the cable in the other way - now the light is out but it says "Insert Disc" when theres a disc in there and won't read it. (the memory card bit works fine). ANy ideas? Thanks |

| if you have the floppy cable bent at all, unbend it. i have had issues before with wrapping cables too tightly or bending them and drives disappearing, undoing that fixed it.

| If the light is on all the time it's usually the cable is on upside down..(if it's not the keyed type) *****edit****** (oooops I missed that you swapped it in your original post)

| checked out the bios - still no joy. So annoying - I mean I don't really need the floppy disk to work, its just the principal of the thing... |

| I have the D875PBZ mobo myself and I've had nothing but troubles with the floppies...(mind you I have troubles with them on any system.... I hate them.....I keep getting disc is not formatted errors when I know for a fact that they are formatted....I even bought a new floppy drive and cables and same thing) I just wrote it off that as I am the center of the universe, the magnetic fields around me must be too strong for the discs ![]()

| I hate floppy drives, but they're a necessary evil! They're a major PITA, they die all the time, the discs are extremely unreliable, and the drives get hosed way too easy! So, try a different floppy disc, I've had a bad disc give me this error. Try that disc in another puter, make sure it's good. I've ran into issues with old beat up floppy drives that could only read/write to discs they formatted, because the head is out of allignment! They couldn't read other drives' discs, nor write to them, they'd say the disc isn't formatted, or insert disc! So, if none of that works, I'd say your floppy drive is a POS, and exchange it for another. Just one quick thought, make sure you have the drive setup properly in the bios, if it's not right in there, it can cause all kinds of funky errors. Make sure it's listed as a 1.44mb floppy, and it's the only one. It's not uncommon to get brand new floppy drives that are DOA, I've had a few. They're unreliable from day one! The best floppy drives are panasonic, followed by mitsumi. Most of the others are junk, except hitachi floppies, which are extremely rare! They last forever, but are incompatable with a lot of other drives' discs. I'd try the drive in another puter just to be sure, and make sure you have the cable in there the right way. The twist should be near the floppy end, and the mobo end should have the cable untouched. Sometimes they're labeled, so look for that. Also, the red striped wire is pin 1, and the mobo should have markings indicating which pin is which. There should be a small 1 by one end of the floppy connector, and possibly other numbers. The red striped wire should be by the pin marked 1 on both ends of the cable, mobo and floppy. If you have the cable backwards, it might be causing the problem because the twisted part of the cable will be on the wrong side! Check that out and make sure it's right. If all that checks out, the drive is bunk, exchange it. ![]() |

| I have a simlar issue on a Compaq EN SFF. Whenever I put in a floppy, I get a message about putting in a formatted disk. I changed the unit and it worked but when I put the case back together, it is giving me a different error now ... Maybe I will try to change the cable and see ... such a pain to work on these small systems.

| Follow up on what Deer Sayer said. But make sure you clear the bios. Remove battery for 10 o 15 secs. Make sure you unplug from power source before you do this.
