Help p4c800 deluxe raid 0 problem

Hi all,

My system (p4c800-deluxe) has a raid 0 array (2 sata 120gb drives) It had
winxp installed on it and something went wrong, I could no longer boot it.
(no need to get into details)

To save the data I hooked up an old ide 30gb drive and installed winxp on
it. I'm now up and running. My plan is to copy off the data I need from
the array and later on rebuild the system again.

I installed the promise raid driver from the asus cd and the array shows up
in 'computer management | storage' but it's not 'mounted'. So I cannot see
the array in win explorer.

My only option it seems is to convert the array from 'basic' to dynamic.
But I'm afraid of losing my data. How can I mount the array and assign it a
drive letter?

Thanks,

update

Hi,

It seems this whole problem is because I installed norton goback on the
array. Norton goback causes the system to hang BEFORE it boots. This
forced me to reinstall winxp on another drive. Because the new install
doesn't have goback on it the array (whose mbr was modified by goback)
cannot be accessed. If I install goback on my new winxp harddrive with the
array plugged in - it still can't boot.

The gb_prog.exe tool for undoing the changes to the mbr wont work on ntfs
drives afaik. So I'm really stuck. My data is still on the drive just
inaccessible due to the modified MBR. I'm also afraid to experiment now
since I can't afford to lose it.

Thanks,

Zander

You should be able to repair the mbr with the XP recovery console (fixmbr http://tinyurl.com/5edkk). Remove the 30 GB drive and boot from your Windows CD to use it (add the drive later to transfer your data). If that doesn't work, it's sometimes possible to reinstall windows (repair installation) without a format to recover data. Any attempts to repair will be risky if your data and Windows installation share the same partition. Something doesn't sound right if you booted from another drive and installed the Promise raid drivers (you didn't use the ATA drivers did you?) and can't access the array...

goback issues cont.

I finally was able to boot my array back into winxp. The trick was found on the symantec website: ctrl-alt-g then F after posting brings up a goback routine to unhook from your mbr. It worked.... Problem is I spent almost 2 days troubleshooting this without a working computer to access the internet to find the solution!!!

Further trouble: Now goback is still installed but can't be disabled: it says: Unable to communicate with the norton goback device driver

and also can't be uninstalled: 'windows has set your c drive into dos compatability mode so goback cannot uninstall' (paraphrased)

At the moment I don't want to try reinstalling goback. System restore will get rid of it (I tried but then undid it) I think I will leave things as they are for the moment until I can back up my array based data first.

Thanks

Kandor

Dude, I have the same $#%@^&*( problem. Goback has hijacked my system. I've spent 5 days working on this. I can boot off my RAID drive which is my C drive and use my systme now but I just can't get rid of GOBACK. I've tried to uninstall it so many times that it can't find itself anymore and I get errors. I can't disable it because I get errors. I can get to my C drive in DOS but system thinks its a CD drive, so I can't copy new NTLDR, NTDETECT, or BOOT.INI files, and I can't delete gobackio.bin either. I can't do system restore cause it fails and I can't do an image restore with Acronis cause it fails also. I'm afraid to do fixmbr cause it might really mess up the MBR. The only thing I can do at this point is to wipe the disk and reinstall a 2 month old image (I hope). This is like the bloody plague, it won't let go.

I get the "Windows has configured Drive C for MS DOS compatibility mode... also". In the goback options window, on history tab at bottom, you can disable goback. Then when you reboot, right before it goes into windows, a goback boot menu pops up (sometimes really fast), you have to hit space bar to stop it and at that point you can say yes to disable goback. But each time I try it, it just gives me an error.

Any one with any knowledge of how to kill this beast, I would greatly appreciate the antidote. Good luck, Kandor!
