How to create NFTS partitions without Windows installed

Hi,

I had to return my boot hard drive due to defective operation. I was able to create a Norton Ghost image of the boot partition, so that I can restore my system without having to reinstall it.

As I created a partition image (and not a disk image), I guess I'll have to create a partition first, before restoring it. Besides that, as the new disk is larger (80Gb vs 60Gb), I'm going to modify my partition sizing scheme so that the C: gets more space.

My question is: how can I create an NTFS partition without having Windows (Xp Pro in my case) installed? Is there a tool similar to fdisk that allows me to create the desired partitions?

Best regards,

Norberto Henriques

And how can I run Partition Magic without Windows? Do I have to install it on another PC and create some sort of boot disk?

Best regards,

Norton Ghost 2002 and later can create it for you. Just run it from the floppy and you should see how easy it is You can make the drive as 1 partition or create a smaller "c" partition. If creating a smaller "c" partition, just select "from image to partition.
If creating one partition on disk, just select "from image to disk"
Hope this helps.

http://www.23cc.com/free-fdisk/

you can create and modify all partitions with that free fdisk

1st: create a partition

2nd: modify it to a NTFS partition

other option is with the windows 2000 or XP installation, you can create/format partitions witht he installer

Thank you all for your answer.

I'll try to use the Norton Ghost feature, as I'm already using it. I did not even think that it could do the trick because this tool is somehow tricky, and a minor mistake can lead to catastrophic results (for instance, I misinterpreted the manual and did a partition backup to another partition, instead of to a file. Gladly I did that to an empty partition, for testing purposes).

Best regards,

Norberto Henriques
