How to install second slave EIDE HD to a Primary SATA HD under XP??????

Just spend 3 #$%^&* hours on the phone with Dell. Got new 8300 Dimension with Pentium 4 HT 3.0GHz running XPpro.
I have
SATA 120 GB 7200 rpm HD.
DVD+RW/CD drive EIDE
DVD/CD Rom drive EIDE
Floppy

Need to install a second slave 40 GB EIDE HD (WD400BB-75CLLBO) with all my data...
Used the secondary drop on a EIDE cable to connect the WD HD to the motherboard, but not detected in bios and does not show in system.
Tried clearing out the ND ram with each new try and let the system detect the new HD upon boot up without success. In a desparate mood, switched the EIDE connectors on the motherboard of the two EIDE DVD/CD drives and the secondary harddrive.....Tried to set the jumper from the 40 GB drive to Cable select ( from slave).....
tried to boot the system without the two other (DVD/CD) EIDE devices and only the SATA and the EIDE harddrive......
Whatever the heck I do, the secondary slave HD does not show up....

Dell doesn't have any answers either.....
HELP!!!!

By the way when I connect the EIDE connector and the power to the 40GB HD back in my old Dell NT box and the HD shows up fine...Thats why i love NT......

Hello,
For now just try this....just put the drive on master(jumper) and connecting only the Hard Drive to the cable installed in whatever IDE port your using....first try the middle connector on the cable(which under Cables select would be the master) and then try the outer connection with no other drives connected to the cable just to see if it recognizes it in the bios.....

Sorry if I missed something. Whats on the cable with the new drive?
If its by its self WD drive have a neutral pin setting for when its the only device on the cable, pins 6&4 I think. You might give that a try. I assumed that the two optical drives are on the same cable, and this second HD is by itself, since your other drive is SATA.

Ok, tried skis suggestion, putting the jumper to master. After reboot into bios i clear the nd ram and reboot ...now it is recognising the HD....However, when I check it with partition magic...it shows as disk 1, while my SATA boot disk shows as disk 2...??? What is more troubling is that upon shutdown and reboot, the second WD hard drive is gone again...SO to see it again I need to boot into bios etc......clear the nd ram etc.....

phead...nothing on the EIDE cable with the second drive...
On the WD drive the jumper settings are

CS (Cable Select)
Slave
Master
-
PM2

So are you suggesting to put the jumper on the pins - (where nothing is etched) on the PC board??

Thanks for the fast answers. Just to make sure I can actually do my job with this new PC, I just spend an hour copying all my data from the (temporarily working) "slave drive to the Boot harddrive.
But I will try the neutral setting...

Now that the EIDE HD works, what would you recommend for a the next HD in this machine? Short of a 4 disk Raid 0/1?
