it spins, but that is it. it won't read or write. and when it starts spinning it won't stop until i force shut down the computer and then i can open it.
the drive is 2 years old and probably burned over 1200 discs

Take a look at this burner which I just told by JoeBar:
http://www.pioneer-eur.com/eur/produ...onomy_id=43-92

I personally haven`t looked yet for something good nor know if that Pioneer lasts but it looks good by its features. It doesn`t mention about buffer underun protection though. It`s an affordable 8X DVD R- burner.
Here costs about 160$

EDIT
It supports buffer underun protection. It says that here:

NEC ND-2500A. Cheap, fast, well-built, burns with high quality results.

I would recommend the new Pioneer 107 or NEC ND-2500a drives if you can't afford the Plextor PX708a drives.

i got the px-708 and i have lots of problems with this drive, updated the firmware to version 1.04, using NERO 6, ASPI version 4.6

Out of 8 dvds ony 4 were sucessfully burned, all the others failed at various percentages, cd burning is rather difficult as well, even when he says sucessfully burned the cd is unreadable, i'm searching for the reason, but i have no clue what it might be.

btw: the actual burning speed is also a lot lower than it should be (in fact it's only 1/4 of what it should be)

Is it unreadable even to the same drive,or is unreadable on other DVD/CD ROM?If is only unreadable under other device then do the following.
Do you set the CD to be"closed"?
In compilation you must start a "no multissesion" under multisession and then choose "Finallize CD" under Burn option.

Make sure you have updated to the latest Nero 6. There were issues with earlier Nero 6 versions that came out before the drive was out.

A standardized packet writing protocol for RW discs. It's a nice thing, but from what I know, Microsoft isn't supporting it until Longhorn, which is a few years ahead. Nice in theory, but I don't think it's used anywhere yet, and it's been around as a standard for a couple of years already.
