My new P4B533 should be here any day now. I'm trying to get a headstart on installing this thing. Basically i'm only replacing the mobo and power supply for now. I've read that i should reinstall my os clean on my HDD before plugging it in to the mobo. I have XP Home w/SP1. Is it absolutly necessary to do a clean install even though i have all the latest drivers on my HDD for every other peice of hardware. Excuse me if this is an ignorant question but i am an OLD person trying NEW things

I do not think you will hurt anything by avoiding a new install before assembling everything. If something goes haywire, you can always do a reinstall or clean install when you have to. Good luck!

It is not absolutely necessary to do a clean install. You have all the necessary drivers on your HDD anyway, and it should be OK Install all your componensts to your new board, boot using the XP Home CD Select to 'INSTALL' and not 'REPAIR' Proceed through the licencing agreement etc; When Setup recognises that WinXPalready exsists in your HDD, select "REPAIR' Setup should continue with its upgrade process with all the new hardware present but it should maintain all your SETTINGS with your old HDD that you are using. Might take a while for this final setup process, but be patient! If there are problems then a new install might be necessary. Remember to save all your important files onto CDs or other external storage devices before you embark on this process!! Good luck! | |

I tried to get away with that when I replaced my Tusl2-c. It was a no go for me. Wouldn't boot from my xp cd to repair it. I was forced to reinstall all over again, which was fine since my registry probably looked like a salad bar. I hadn't reformatted since I first installed xp. That was a record for me.

I just successfully installed a P4PE board using two old hard drives. OS was Win 98 SE; the install went great!! Win redetected most everything and installed the right drivers. I was surprised and pleased that it went so well.
