Question Newbie Question

I'm just about done putting together my first system. Using the P4PE (non G-lan) with an Intel P4 3.06 and 512 Corsair XMS. I chose not to go Raid mainly because of the issues mentioned here nor the SATA as the drives aren't out yet so I ordered the 120GB WD SE which is coming Monday.
Here's the question. The only other drive I have is a Sammy DVD/CD/RW combo drive which I was planning on putting as a slave to the WD on the PRI_IDE. First of all is that going to effect my performance having the DVD/RW drive on the same channel as the WD? Also I've seen here that I may need to set the jumers on the WD in the neutral position but I see others setting it as CS and others as Master to the RW drive as slave.
Since I have nothing on the SEC_IDE should I put the RW drive there and leave the lone WD on the PRI-IDE? I'm probably making this all more difficult than it needs to be.
Thanks.

Hi,
Welcome to Asusboards.com,

I personaly would put it on the SEC_IDE as master. I am positive there would be a gain in performance put can't really explain it.. Its better, usually the manual states this too.

So, have ur WD on PRI_MASTER, and DVDRW on SEC_MASTER.

H,
Thanks for the quick reply. Then if I put the RW drive on the secondary (SEC_PRI) putting just the WD on the primary would I set the WD as Cable Select as Western Digital's site suggests, set it as Master or as some suggest remove the jumper all together.
Thanks again.

I have a WD 80GB, I cant remember but i think i removed the jumper (i "think" it was cause i couldnt find a setting for master),

OK OK HOLD ON

had a look into my case I REMOVED THE JUMPER for it be master on PRI IDE alone.
yep remove the jumper

good luck with ur new PC.

Aye, if your Western Digital is alone on it's own channel, always remove the jumper. As H states, it is always best to give your drives their own channel if you can.

That's what I suspected. Thanks. That's what I'll do.
