Problems Backing Up HD with Acronis True Image 9.0

I am backing up the hard disk contents to write to my fresh new one (old laptop drive to a new one) and at about 85% is tells me that is can't read the sectores from xxxxxxx (i forgot the number)..... am I f'd? What's the deal here?!

I took out the laptop drive and used an IDE-USB 2.0 adapter to transfer the data to a free hard drive with enough space and that is as far as I get ...... actaully, like I said, I can't even get a backup totally on there...

It is an old 20GB 4200 RPM drive going to a 7200RPM 80GB drive......

OH and the error code is Read Error (0x70003)

Thanks......
jeeka.

Wilders

Have you tried posting your problem at the Acronis support forum?
http://www.wilderssecurity.com/forumdisplay.php?f=65
Also Acronis support was, in my case, quite exceptional in working with me to get TI 8 working perfectly. TI 9 has just been released and yes there are issues. From the research I've done imaging in general to the many different configurations in existence is a difficult endeavor. Be patient and Acronis will work with you to fix your problems. I've bought TI 9 but am waiting for TI 9 to "mature" some. In my opinion True Image is the best there is in imaging. Perfect? NO! is anything?

Are you using the latest build of 9? 2337
Are you cloning, imaging or using file backup? as it makes a difference. Have you tried running chkdsk on the old drive to make sure there are no problems with it? If not do so. Run it on all partitions if you have more than one. From a dos box type chkdsk <driveletter> /r then hit enter. Do this for all partitions. When the boot partition is chosen you will be asked "do you want to run chkdsk on the next boot" choose yes and then reboot.
Once you have run chkdsk on all partitions clean up any in needed files, temp browser cache etc. then defrag all partitions.

Now if you want to move your OS and all the data to the new drive use the clone function. If you want to just move your OS use the Image option.
If all you want to do is move files aka your backup data, pictures mp3's etc. Just copy them manually as I'm unsure if the file backup would do you any good and it may be still broken in the latest build 2337.

Please post back with results and more info on what you are trying to do and how you are going about it.

UPDATE: Acronis TI 9.0 Laptop HD to Laptop NEW HD..

I tried everything, it still could not read the sectors, it constantly got stuck at 85% when it started to act up, sooooooo.......

I went back to 8.0xxx and I threw in the old drive into the laptop again, and hooked the new one up via the usb 2.0 to IDE connector in USB 1.1 MODE!!!!!!!!! EWWWWWW

That took FOREVER.. AND I still had drive errors, so it looks like it was the disk that was most likely the problem, perfect timing on the upgrade...

I ignored all the sectors it could not read and low and behold the new drive has worked flawlessly so far... and it's FAST, more than twice as fast on booting, more than 2 times as fast in benchmarks and about 2 times as fast in real world usage... love it!

So, that was my experience.. hope this is helpful to anyone out there in abx land!

Thanks.

Chances are you do have some corrupt files that were in those sectors you ignored, but they can generally be fixed once you find them
