| Re: Raptor - Worth it? 1) My 74GB Raptor is just as quiet as my other drives. 2) When I bought it (maybe 2 years ago) there were no 7K drives out there that could possibly compare. Though now I expect there are 1 or 2 with 16MB cache closing in. 3) The raptors spindle speed give them a great advantage, But the real beauty of this drive is often overlooked... its seek time If I remember right it is in the neighborhood of 4 ms while other drives are twice as long. 4) Large drive caches can speed things up a bit, but I think not as much so the first time files are accessed. (Which occurs upon bootup) |

lol sorry about the OT as well Peter, but more on the subject, as long as you have an otherwise fast system, HDD's are often the bottle neck. My laptop for example with a wimpy 5200 spindle speed is unquestionably the major lag in the machine. The HDD light just about stays locked on and you can tell that's what your waiting for. I chose bigger over faster and if I could go back I would have got the smaller 7200. I assumed my HP dv9000t supported RAID and I could just add another later since it has 2 bays, but it does not. Pays to read I guess..

| Re: Raptor - Worth it? What is your experience with the Raptor. The 74MB is supposed to be slightly quieter than the 150. I have 2 74's (one as boot, the other as storage) and am very pleased - they do not seem to be any louder than the WD 80's I am running in other systems. And they are certainly faster.

I can't quite figure out the see through panel thing. If the drive is in a drive cage than you can't see the see through window. Or is there a hard drive set up where you can? | |

It's good... WD complies with the Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) Directive 2002/95/EC of the. European Parliament, which is effective in the EU since 2006..
