Re: Raptor - Worth it?

I read this article concerning the value of additional ram recently. On one page in particular, the author opened 20, then 200 photos using a seagate 7200.10 and a raptor.

With 20 photos, the raptor was .5 to 1.5 seconds faster. With 200 photos, the raptor was up to 130 seconds faster!!!

bit-tech.net | Review - Is More Memory Better?

This confirms my "instinct/feeling" that the raptor is faster in usage, even if other hd's have gotten closer in benchmarks.

Currently I'm working on a hard drive box mod (Lian-Li PC-71 case) where I cut out the left side of the hard drive box and created a black aluminum frame with an acrylic panel, making a window so that you can see the first hard drive. I am going to mount a LED to illuminate the inside of the window panel. I wanted to mount the Rapter X there so that you can see the platter and the arm. I'm about half done the mod and wouldn't be too pleased to find out that WD doesn't make the Rapter X anymore. If they don't, I was hoping that WD would make a window version of the new 300GB VelociRaptor.

I started this back in 2004!) so if I do get the hard drive now, it's going to be sitting on the shelf for about 1 year before I'm done and build the new pc.

I couldn't post anyting now anyway - no flatbed scanner, no printer and no digital camera. In order to post pictures, I would have to use my film camera, fill the roll, take in to be developed and a set of pictures made, have them scan it on to CD, and then use the pictures on the CD to post on the web - too much trouble and money.

If you check the Discontinued Products list at the Western Digital site you will find the Raptor X on the list.

The VelociRaptor is probably too small to put a window on it.

No problem re the pix.

Any known problems with the Raptor X for WD to decide not to make it anymore?

Re: Raptor - Worth it?

The WD 750GB HDD is faster than the old raptors, and not far off from the new velociraptors plus its cheaper and has a higher capacity. Thats a better option imo.. you could get two of them for a similar price and RAID them

Re: Raptor - Worth it?

Raid 0 is not a secure way to keep your data safe: you've got the speed, but no security, unless you use some true system backup soft like True Image Home from Acronis.
I am using 3 raptors in raid 5: that means more security but slower performance (no bad performance though).
I also tried Raid 10, but the Intel controler had "some" problems when a suddden restart/reboot was asked, so I abandonned it and went to Raid 5.

As I can see, this case looks very much like an AOpen big tower (with self-made wholes on the left side) from a long time ago. I can assure you that this case has a very bad noise isolation (noise protection was not as important as now), and is not at all representative from the isolation of today's cases.

Re: Raptor - Worth it?

I wonder why they did not design a Velociraptor as see-through as well...?

Ironically they sound a bit like the old 95 era drives that held 4g maybe.
With a good case, like the Antec P182, the noise produced by 4*150 GB Raptors is negligeable.
