Regular HD with external backup, Software RAID (1 or 5), or Hardware RAID (1 or 5)?

Hi,

I've been reading up on RAID lately since I'm in the planning stages of a couple new computers. Many years ago I had nothing but trouble when I tried software RAID 0, and many people I've talked to have confirmed that using software RAID 0 is like playing Russian Roulette. So, as a result I've spent some time considering hardware RAID cards, which seem to be $300+ for anything that has 4 ports. Ultimately, what I want is the best combination of speed, reliability, and value. Some questions:

Is software RAID 1 worth considering? Is it as bad as software RAID 0? Is the CPU usage noticeable at all?

If software RAID 1 is a bad idea, are there any good 2 port RAID 1 cards that are actually hardware, and not software based like many of them seem to be?

Am I better off just getting a fast non-RAID drive and doing an occasional external backup?

Thanks

A couple of question I need to ask before hand.
1. What is going to be stored on the RAID arrays?
2. Are you going for redundancy above performance or somewhere in between?

Re: Regular HD with external backup, Software RAID (1 or 5), or Hardware RAID (1 or 5

important documents, music, movies, work stuff, photoshop stuff, etc. no video editing or computer games.

ideally i'd have both redundancy and performance (raid5), but i think i'd settle for a RAID 1 setup. mainly what I'm looking for is whether or not the difference between RAID 1 hardware vs. software is as big as RAID 5 hardware vs. software. Is it really worth getting a RAID 1 hardware setup instead of using onboard mobo type stuff?

With RAID 1 it really does not matter. The software RAID 1 is slightly slower benchmark wise than a hardware RAID 1, but not noticeable. Really there is no difference, you could unplug you and plug it into another system and it would operate like it should whether software or hardware. RAID 5 on the other hand is another story. If your OS gets hosed, so does the software RAID 5. For RAID 5 the only way to really go is with a controller card.

For your second question the onboard will work. I have switched RAID 1 and RAID 0 between different controllers and none have had a problem
