| Don't bother with the Adaptec 1200A. It is slower then either the Highpoint or the Promise cards. Beyond that, I don't know what else to say.

| OK, thanks gorgo. IIRC, the Promise cards use HighPoint chips, correct? I tried to view the PDF at Promise.com but I gotta clean up this 1.9 gig drive to make room for Acrobat Reader. LOL

| No, Promise makes their own chips for their own cards. Promise and Highpoint are two competing companies. I have the TX2000 and find it to be a very good card. The problem is, I haven't got to 8MB cache drives at the moment to let you know how they perform. Ozzie is using the Highpoint card and the problem he is experiencing is low write speeds. The reads and in the 80's and the writes are in the 50's. He should be getting better then that. Since he hasn't tested it on any other board besides a P4T533, it is hard to say if it is the card or not.

| OK, thanks for clearing that up Gorgo. My mistake. I am more interested in reads (I think) for gaming and such than writes as I don't do any video editing or anything like that. Faster writes would be nice for installing programs and such but... Who knows down the road? I couldn't get reads over 40, and writes rarely broke 30 in ATTO. The only other thing I noticed is that I couldn't select Overlapped I/O in ATTO as it is disabled for Windows 98SE. Would that make that much of a difference?

| By don't bother you mean with 8mb cache drives right? Under w2k @ work, using 2 40 gig WD 2mb cache I'm getting ~65k writes, 80-85k reads..... I set this thing up a long time ago but I believe it's the standard stripe size. Quote:

| I think he meant the the Adapetc 1200A is just plain slower than the others. Maybe he meant with the 8 mb drives. I have two 8 mb SE's so I want the card that will work the best with them. Naturally. I don't wanna go broke buying RAID cards. I already made one huge mistake and don't want to make another.

| If my order actually went through for my new 3Ware card - for a RAID 5 configuration, I will be selling my 7210. I think I got in the 80s with the controller using 80 Gig SE drives. I would unfortunately have to do way to much work to confirm this again. But if your interested let me know. I will probably sell the card for $60. |

| I was referring to the Adaptec 1200A controller. I don't have a clue how it performs with the 8MB drives, but with 2MB drives it was slower then then Promise and Highpoint cards. The Adaptec 1200A is based on a Highpoint chip as well, so why not just buy a Highpoint card? The 8MB cache drives do outperform 2MB cache drives on a regular controller, so I find it a bit surprising that putting them on a RAID controller hinders their performance at all. Right now I have a Maxtor 120GB DiamondMax Plus 9 drive and it has gone belly up on me. I am trying to get my data off of it right now, and it is a job and a half as it keeps kicking up CRC errors. I plan to replace it with a WD drive and was thinking of an SE drive. The real reason being that I can get a 3 year warranty with it in addition to top performance.

| Hey Gorgo, good luck with the data recovery. I lost some when a drive died but lucky for me, it wasn't anything really important. I knew someone was using HighPoint chips. Its Adapetc

| Well, I was hoping that Ozzie would chime in here some new/updated results. Yea, this is a bump for any new thoughts anyone may have. ![]()

| If you're looking for a good inexpensive raid card - the rocketRAID can't be beat. It's a solid performer and is working very well - I ended up using it in my dually board because it works in the pro slot (64 bit) My dual WD 8MB's are now running RAID0 on a 3WARE in the P4T533...the reads are blazing (95k+)

| Thanks for the update Ozzie. You are talking about the HighPoint 100, not 133 correct? Any idea what numbers you are getting? Like I said before I couldn't get reads over 40 with the other card I had. Have the updated drivers been better with the 8 mb buffer drives? I'd be extatic if I could get 65+ on the reads, let alone the writes. Just out of curosity, what 3Ware card are you using and what OS? I read on here that the 3Ware's are horridly SLOW with XP?

| Ozzie, Have you tried Pbeyers suggestion of upping the PCI Latency setting? Personally I never drop below 64 for this setting. And if Im tweaking RAID I slowly set it higher and higher until LAN or audio problems appear and then drop it back a notch

| Gees SLM... ![]() Yes - the 100...55k on writes and 75k on reads on the P4T533. I never got as far as updated drivers they haven't been updated as far as I know yet - now the rocketRAID is running some old IBM's. The 3WARE is the low budget model and running the WD 8MB's - I don't remember the model, but it was around $120...nice card with low cpu utilization. Fast reads and so-so (read - slow) writes - at least on the P4T533 - I can't seem to go faster with this board. I haven't tried the 3WARE on another board to see if it made a difference - maybe someday, but I got tired of moving everything around and reinstalling. I haven't used XP much...kind of a 2000 guy myself... Whew! Now - ok - whatcha gonna do boss?
