SATA DVD writers

I'm pricing out a new system and as part of my build I want to keep it as legacy-free as possible. Eliminating my reliance on PATA for my optical drive is one of the last pegs in that plan.

A few companies make SATA DVD burners, and I was wondering if anyone had any experience or comments about them. I was thinking of getting the Plextor 16X 755SA, but it's fairly expensive vs. other drives, over $100 non-OEM. One thing that caught my eye is Plextor has a compatibility list on their site, and they don't have much on there for Intel boards (I am eyeing the BadAxe2).. They have the 965 and 945 on there with pretty much all-good across the board, but I didn't want to take any chances.

I'm afraid I can't speak from personal experience with a SATA ROM drive but I know the next one I get will be one. I am sick to death of the IDE problems I have where media is slow to read and prone to burn errors. I have an over priced Plextor 716A slot load and I am not very happy with it. The slot gimmic is neat but hasn't been worth the high price not to mention it has only been a so so drive. I swear it eventually scratches discs after loading several times. It is noisy at times as well. I think the majority of the problems have to do with the IDE controllers but still next time I will go with a reasonably priced SATA drive like an LG perhaps if they even make them. I know there will be no ribbons in my next build.

I have the 716sa and love it. I haven't had any problems with it at all. I have been thinking about getting another 716sa or the 755 to replace my other DVD drive since it is IDE and doesn't match the case.
