Seagate vs. Western Digital - Page 2

I just got a Western Digital Caviar RE WD3200YS 320GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb drive for my new rig for backup and it comes with a 5 year warranty just like the Raptor, I can't believe the prices on drives now a days compared to just a couple of years ago.....

I have a 74 gig raptor and a 120gig Seagate in my old rig now and so far no problems (I do have a 120mm fan blowing directly on them which helps) believe it or not the raptor is quieter than the seagate especially seeking!

With the drives becoming so cheap they are like throw away drives.

Funny how different people have different results, I have 8 seagate drives , 9 if you count my freeagent usb drive and they all perform as advertised. I also have a couple of hitachi drives that haven't given me any trouble yet.. I've personally lost 3 WD drives in the last couple of years.

As for machines that come into my shop with bad drives, I've never replaced a seagate... Tons of maxtors and WD drives have gone to the recyclers though ( this may just be due to the fact that seagates weren't as cheap a few years back and a lot more systems came with the cheaper drives)

Its a hit and miss on the drives now a days.

Raptors have a high failure rate?

I've got these in raid arrays all over the country running 24/7 with a zero failure rate....I'd like to know where you get your info because it's not correct. I have 2 36gb drives still running in a small server right now, they are going on 4 years old and are no louder than the day we bought them.

We use seagate drives for our workstation builds, mainly because of the 5 year warranty and the quiet operation. The failure rate is about the same as WD desktop drives, maybe slightly better.

Just because you havent had a failure doesnt mean raptors dont fail. Some countries that make the drives have a lower quality then other places and seems that there drives fail faster. I almost got one but after reading reviews from newegg and some other forums the drives seem to fail faster then other drives. I guess its because of the speed and heat that comes off them.

Last year when I was researching drives, the WDs used less power, hence run cooler. I got a lots of WD250 SE16's and have had no problems in three computers.

Most of my WD250SE's are OEM and a few are boxed. The weird thing is that the color (silver or black) was not consistent. Most boxed (shorter warranty) units were black, but some were silver.

Shouldn't be the speed, since the Raptors use SCSI class motors and actuators, so either WD has lessened the quality (that would suxors) or people are just letting them get too hot.

Could be theres a lot of cheap cases out there that dont cool very well.

I have a load of Seagate drives 9 and counting and 4 WD Raptors. I have never had a single hard drive problem (knock on wood). Well except for the $10 Maxtor I bought for grins that crapped out 2 days after warranty ended.

That's for sure - when I look at people's screen shots (why can't I overclock...) and they are showing 50-75 deg C just idling, ugh - ambient case temps just too high! I don't like to go much over 50 deg C overclocked and under load. There will be a 120mm fan (~60 cfm) blowing right at the side of my Raptor.

Thats the same drives im looking at getting its either those or the 1 TB drive from seagate.

I have the 500GB version and I'm very pleased with it. LOL, that drive has 5 times the storage of the Raptor for about the same price!
