Seagate vs. Western Digital

Hi

Which 750Gb internal SATA2 hard disk drive is the best? Is it Western Digital or Seagate?

Thanks
NBK

Re: Seagate vs. Western Digital

I have the WD. It is fast, quiet and cheaper than the Seagate.
edit: the warranty is longer on the Seagate, unless you buy the WD RE2, but that one is a lot more expensive.

Re: Seagate vs. Western Digital

My personal preference would be for the Western Digital.

Re: Seagate vs. Western Digital

Need to watch on some of the newer WD drives the rpms on the drivers run between 5400-7200rpm. I had good luck with seagate upto 320gb and wd upto 500gb. The bigger the drive the more heat it gives off.

Re: Seagate vs. Western Digital

I have been using Seagate drives for a few years now, but recently started purchasing Western Digital (again). I read a lot of negative reviews on the Seagate drives over at Newegg. I do not know if those reviews reflect reality or not, but it did influence my decision. I also had some reservations in the back of my mind as a result of Seagate's purchase of Maxtor, which had a reputation for making decent but cheap drives and I suspected that quality might take a nosedive. Finally, I think Seagate reduced their warranty and Western Digital strengthened theirs.

I know a lot of people and even me that had a lot of seagate drives fail. I never had a wd drive fail on me.

Re: Seagate vs. Western Digital

I'm a long time Seagate buyer, but I think their quality has slipped a bit (they do have the advantage of a 5yr warranty). Hence my last drive was a 500GB WD and I've just ordered a 150GB WD Raptor (using the 500 as backup NAS, and swapping the Raptor in as my main drive). So I'd likely go with WD for a 750 GB Drive if I needed one.

My next HD purchase will likely be another WD 500 to run in Raid 1 with the existing 500GB drive).

Raptors are nice but they have a high failure rate. I have a few wd 500gb drives for my server and they are fast.

Re: Seagate vs. Western Digital

I have a mix of Seagate, WD and Maxtor drives in my machines -- prolly about a dozen in all. WD used to fail a lot while Seagate kept on ticking. During the past few years, however, it seems that WD has gotten better while Seagate has slipped. Maxtor has been a disappointment, too.

Re: Seagate vs. Western Digital

I had a few 200 and 300gb seagates and everyone failed. I used maxtor for a few years and had good luck with them, not sure how they are now. WD does seem to be doing a good job on there drives.

Hmm, perhaps inadequate cooling? I'll have a fan blowing over mine. And yes, the 500GB drive are surprisingly fast.

Could be a heat problem, but i hear a lot about them becoming real loud at operation.

Re: Seagate vs. Western Digital

I bought my first Seagate drive a 7200.10 320 gig on 04/02/07. Its still working without any troubles. The sad thing is its a dog as my old ide WD 160 gig was faster and quieter. I bought it because the warranty was 5 years.

If I was going to do it again I'd be buying a Samsung spinpoint T or F1 series as they now have a 3 year warranty, was only a year when I bought my Seagate. The Samsung drives I have seen are silent very cool running and perform better than Seagate or WD 7200 rpm drives in most tests I have read on the net. Their 750 gig F1 is cheaper at newegg than Seagate or WD.
Not many reviews on the new F1 series but this one looks like they have another winner.

That's not good - that's like the old WDs with ceramic bearings. AFAIK the Raptors have FD bearings. Well, I'll find out Fortunately, I'll be backing up regularly.
