Slightly Scratched DVDs stutter on PC DVD Drives but play fine on DVD players ??

Slightly Scratched DVDs stutter on PC DVD Drives but play fine on DVD players ??
Any specific reason ?
Are DVD drives more sensitive or something ?
Or are hardware Mpeg Decoders better at handling scratched DVDs ?
This is because everytime i play movies on my pc some scratched dvd just wont go past a point etc. But then it plays fine at the dvd library on their standalone dvd player.
Are there any possible solutions ? such as certain dvd drives that are more consistent in reads etc ?

It's got nothing to do with the mpeg decoding; it has to do with retrieving the bits from the disk. The ability to read disks that have defects is one measure of the quality of the design of a cd or dvd player or drive. In principle computer drives are not necessarily inferior to standalone players, but I suppose it figures that the mechanism within a $25 or so computer drive will not be as good as the one in a much more expensive standalone player.

Hello Ctal > Is there any good make or brand of optical drive which does a good job of reading DVDs on par with stand alone systems ?

Don't know. All that comes to mind is to look at the user reviews at Newegg on various drives, and maybe do some Googling.

BTW, the recordable dvd's I use are Taiyo Yuden brand, which have a reputation (that I have found to be justified) of being more universally readable than most other brands. I use 16x rated disks, and burn them at 8x.

Here is a site that does error correction testing with scratched DVD's as part of their reviews. CdrInfo.com - The Hardware Authority

There are at least two brands of polishing mechanisms (around $25 or $30) to remove scratches.
