| Two harddisk connected to IDE 0? I've an AOPEN MX4GR motherboard and 2 IDE/ATA harddisks as well as 1 CD Writer and 1 DVD Writer. 1 Harddisk (master) on which XP-SP2, Programs have been installed and the CD-Writer (slave) is connected to IDE 0. I bought a 2nd Harddisk as well as a DVD Writer, which I want to connect to IDE 1. This 2nd harddisk (master) should only function as a back-up harddisk. Is this set-up correct or should I connect the 2 harddisks to IDE 0 and the CD/DVD Writers to IDE 1? Looking forward to your expert advice! |

| Either configuration should work, but my personal recommendation would be to make the hard dives masters on each of the two channels, and the opticals the slaves. That will speed up hard drive to hard drive transfers a bit since the two hard drives will be on different IDE channels. |

| PC Bruiser, the way you're acting SOOOOO quickly to my question is absolutely phenomenal. Thank you!!! And thanks for your confirmation that my initial set-up is the best. |

| I would put the IDE that is used on the ATA100 (IDe0 I think) channel, and the other HDD on the master of the IDE1. The do the the opticals as slaves also. I have read (don't know for sure) that similar devices like to be on seperate channels. |

| I have always been under the impression that an IDE transfer rate is only as fast as the slowest device on the ribbin cable. Dont most CD's funtion on a 33mb transfer rate? With a HD utilizing 100mb rate and CD utilizing 33, wouldnt that slow the HD to 33?

| If I understand it correctly, if you are transferring from an ATA100 to an ATA33, then that is true. I don't think it makes any difference what other device is on there, as long as you are not transferring to it. IE if you are transferring from one master to another then the slowest drive will be the regulator, so to speak. The interesting thing is that supposedly, if you have two ATA100 drives, you then would want them on the same IDE ATA100 channel, one master and one slave. If you have an ATA33 in the string, then it wouldn't make any difference. |

| For about $40 you can buy a Promise Ultra 133 TX2 controller card (they also make an Ultra 100 TX2 card for a few dollars less). Then you could put your hard drives on the Promise (boot drive on IDE 1 as master and other drive on IDE 2 as master). Then you can put your optical drives on your motherboard's IDE ports, each as master. Everything will then be on its own channel as masters and will be happy..... Of course you have to have $40 and a spare PCI slot for the Promise.
