How do I get my cusl2 to operate my ibm deskstar drive to operate at udma mode 5. My hard drive is capable of this specification. When I use IBM's EZ SMART drive utility to check it, it shows the drive at udma mode 4. The drive has been set to udma 5, I have already checked to see if that was the reason but it is not. Is the ide cable that came with the board of the proper type??? Hope someone can help me out. Thanks

Your drive has to be an ATA100 type and use the 80 wire cable as Mule said to enable mode [5].

| If its showing UDMA 4 then your using the right wire because the same wire that enables UDMA 4 enables UDMA 5,so the wire is not the problem, you need to install the Intel ATA drivers, and if you already have Uninstall it and reinstall it again, then afterwards your bios should recognize it as UDMA 5.

Your problem isn't the HDD either the EZ-SMART monitoring tool. It is a little outdated so that it doesn't recognize UDMA 5 capable HDD's. And no, there is not a newer version available yet. Why don't you simply benchmark ypur drive with HD Tach 2.61 ( http://www.tcdlabs.com )? This tool shows you your hardrive's Burst speed. If the Burst rate is above 66 mb/s then your harddrive is in UDMA 5 mode. I have an IBM Deskstar HDD too (DTLA 307045). Here EZ-Smart reports only an UDMA 4 drive too but HD Tach benches a Burst Speed of over 80 mb/s. I'm not using the intel U-ATA drivers because there are causing problems with my CD-R/RW drive and there is no need 'cause I'm using Win ME. Actually the intel drivers are degrading the performance a little, especially regarding the CPU Utiliziation because it is 3 times higher than with the default MS U-ATA drivers. If in bios your HDD is recognized as UDMA 5 capable and in Windows the DMA box is checked then you shouldn't have any problems with the performance of your hard disk. Benchmark with HD Tach and you will have the prove! HTH, Guntro

Hello, How about if you check the bios and see if you can set it to UDMA 5 or if it does already detect it that way. Michael

EZ Smart problem was the EZ Smart utility. One of you said it, the utility was not able to report udma mode 5. Thanks to all of you for your input, for lack of a better word. My system is running at udma 5.
