Western Digital My Book, Who has one?

I just ordered a Western Digital My Book 500gb for $115 shipped. I read the reviews and they look pretty good and the way WD did the external case looks sweet. Does anyone have any comments on the Western Digital My Book?

I have a 250GB version. Seems ok. Just use it for storage. Never really pay much attention to it but it worked great right out of the box.

I plan on using mine for backup and transfering files around. Should work fine for that only thing that catches my eye is that it only has a 1year warranty.

Use it for storage only.

I used one of mine actively for almost 24/7. It burned out in 11 months. Just in time for warranty replacement. My internal drives never had that problem.

Which one did you get? What color is it?

Seems like a lot of people are having a power failure with these units.

USB drives are prone to failure as far as my usage goes...they don't like to be moved around much it seems.
I tried having a few movies on one and used it for traveling... bad idea I guess...

Must be why they came out with the RAID 1 version.

Get this:

Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 500GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive

And this:

Antec MX-1 USB2.0 & eSATA External Enclosure - Retail

Use the eSATA interface and you will be a very happy camper!

I know I am!

Does the Antec case have a power on light and a drive active light? Sadly the on/off switch is on the backside of the case.

I have one of the 160GB passport drives from them and it works great. Use it all the time.

I've just read some rescent reviews of the MyBooks.

The ones to get are the new ones with the big screws on the outside of the case so you can open them up yourself. You can change fans or drives if you wish. The user can open the drive case without violating the warranty from what I understand.

Re: Western Digital My Book, Who has one?

I have an older one. I have dropped it 3 feet to the floor. Cords got caught and it flopped over on a glass table, it's had a few bumps and still runs fine.
quiet. Fast enough. For me
