Would a cheeper RAID card REALLY matter that much?

Basically I would like to set up a RAID 0 config for my windows XP programs and games. I'm looking and all the ones that are said to be really good and they are mostly 50 and above. Maybe it isn't possible, but is there a way to get a decent raid card for around 30?

I saw these: http://www.newegg.com/app/viewproduc...ion=16-103-310 and they are in my price range. What do you think?

It most likely would be fine. Its just that some of the cards are faster then others. Ususually the faster ones are over $50.

18 bucks for a raid card? Yikes Since you want a raid 0 setup, which is dangerous enough by itself, why skimp on the card? At 18 bucks I wouldn't expect this thing to last a month. Obviously you can try it but that's just way too cheap IMO.

Take a look at the Adaptec ATA RAID 1200A @ $55.00 shipped.

You beat me to it realdieu. I have a few customers on that exact card and they've been very reliable so far. I also had an issue under win98se with these particular cards and Adaptec's support wrote me a special driver ON THE SPOT to test. It was a 4 hour phone call. I don't think support gets any better than that.

I have one of the Tekram DC-200's. So far I have had nothing but problems with random reboots and a reboot problem that is Guarenteed if I try to open the display properties box. I am gonna play with it some more tonight and tomorrow, but I don't have very high hopes. It will probably go RMA and I'll get a Highpoint or Adapetc to replace it.

This is on a CUSL2 w/ 1.1 A
(2) WD 80 gig SE's

formating 120 gig's takes a minute and half but if it isn't stable who cares!

Just rebooted as soon as I posted, FYI.

Oh yea, there isn't a header to hook up the HD led on the Tekram card.

Anyone know if the Adapetc or HighPoint's have a led header?

Hey SLM. Yes, the Adaptec 1200A has a HDD LED header on-board. Yeah, I'd turn that card you have into a Frisbee for sure. Doesn't sound good!

Good luck, man.

If you found that at Pricewatch.com from BEATPRICE.com, they don't have it listed on their web site anywhere. Oh well. Memorymedia.com has them for 60.00 shipped or the HighPoint RocketRAID 100 for 51.00 shipped. I think Ozzie has the HighPoint and likes it.

Hey Oz, if you or anyone with the HighPoint sees this does it have the HDD led header like the 1200A?

Thanks for the info Keith66.

If I had a choice between a HighPoint and Promise, I would go for the HighPoint. At least the Adaptec uses a HighPoint chip.

ah thanks for the advice. my freind told me that RAID isn't even worth the price jump, which may be true, but I'm sure I'll get it sometime in the future, I may as well put the money I'd spend on a 50 card and new 20 gig towards h20 cooling .

Should I be able to trust the RAID that's build into the motherboards these days?
