I know you have to do a full install with XP, but I think you can do a full reinstall with Vista too, using the upgrade version....now I'm not sure on the Vista part but I'm positive on the XP part!

Re: Pricing on Windows 7 Stinks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This release is really a fix for their failure with Vista. Vista has been hurting them ever since they released it. Windows 7 is their hope to get away from the losses of Vista.

So I think its a slap in the face from them to be charging these prices. At the very least they should offer a trade up path for Vista users with serious discount.

As far as I am concerned this is a service pack for Vista.

True----but a pretty darned good service pack!!

Probably worth about $50 if you are coming from Vista SP2......

And if you have an older machine----it's a must upgrade since it doesn't require the ponies like Vista does....

C'mon----did ANYONE really expect MS to give the consumer a break???

I surely didn't.

The Redmond boys are a greedy lot.....always have been.....

Having said that----Windows 7 will be HUGE money making hit for them!!!

Because it IS Vista.....
And because it ISN'T Vista.....

Go figure......

EDIT:

I'll buy it and upgrade the day it comes out....

(Sigh....) it's what I do.......

every Windows 7 retail/upgrade box (except Home Basic) comes with both 32-bit and 64-bit install discs

I didn't realize that Vista users can do a clean install or an in-place upgrade with these 'Upgrade Editions'...I thought you could only do an upgrade...so it's the same thing as having the full version?...then why call it an 'upgrade' version for?...and why would anyone pay more money for the OEM or full retail versions if you can get the same thing with these editions?

I reinstall/reformat a lot, and I dont want to have to install Vista then upgrade to 7 everytime

never mind I finally understand this now...you can do a clean install with the Windows 7 upgrade version BUT you still have to have Vista/XP installed first...you can't just do a clean install with no OS on your system...I knew it sounded too good to be true lol

In the case of XP there was a way around it so you could do a clean install using the upgrade without any previous installation... You just need to have a qualifying Win98/Me/2000 CD to insert during the installation for verification... other versions of windows also worked like NT...

There was also a way to do a clean install from the upgrade disc without any qualifying media... but I dont remember how that was done...

Re: Pricing on Windows 7 Stinks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well here's a deal, I don't know if you can keep using Vista after you get your Windows 7 disc, but $189 for both for Ultimate isn't terrible?

Newegg.com - Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate SP1 64-bit for System Builders w/ Tech Guarantee - Operating Systems

What? u mean compared with $220.00 for the regular upgrade price? Without knowing what the caveats may be I'd say sure its better, but I'm still unimpressed with the pricing.

$50 upgrade for Fista users would be more my expectation...

Thats what it should have been, You should have heard Paul Thurotte backtrack on his podcast with Leo Laporte about the prices, he was hoping for $50 to $100 for the regular upgrade price...here's the link ti the podcast if your bored..

Oh my gosh----I had to listen to absolute DRIVEL for about 10 minutes before I heard ANYTHING of substance from that Twitcast....

Aptly named.

I guess I'm a twit because I wasted the time to try to get to the meat of the podcast....

Interesting once you got to it though......

Re: Pricing on Windows 7 Stinks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

After some research.....

Appears that most users who use the Ultimate edition----really only need Professional now.

It has everything except:
BitLocker
BranchCache
DirectAccess
AppLocker
MultiLanguage Packs

If you look up the features of the above set-----a VERY small amount of folks will EVER need to upgrade to Ultimate.

One other item of interest..... If you do an upgrade it will install a complete new OS----not patch over the existing OS----and you can have the option later on of deleting and cleaning out the old OS files. This has been the case since Vista and several test sites reported NO performance differences between an Upgraded Machine and a Clean Install machine. So you may not even have to worry about doing a clean install

$100 for a Win 7 upgrade is still too much----but it's a darn site better than the $230 they have been quoting for a Ultimate Upgrade----and should be cheaper than any OEM version.

So this may be the best deal we can find.....

I'm going to order some from Amazon.....

Re: Pricing on Windows 7 Stinks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I got that email from Microsoft offering to sell me a pre-release W7 for $49 as an appreciation for my participation in the evaluation of the product. Imagine my surprise when I see the same pre-release offered by Costco at $44. Microsoft really does suck.
