Of course they'll be cheaper! They always are. And virtually all of us system builders will be buying the OEM version anyway!

Best Buy up here in Canada has Vista Home Premium Full 32BIT Retail for $249.00 CDN.

NCIX.com has Vista Home Premium 32BIT OEM for $136.58 CDN.

The OEMs will be cheaper!

not really surprised at the pricing...wasn't really expecting MS to sell Vista for $99 or anything...seems on par with Vista pricing...the Home Premium version is around $40 cheaper though

but who buys the retail version anyhow?...I thought most knowledgeable people bought the OEM version

I never bought a retail in my life, there has been a lot of talk on other sites ( Paul Thurrott ), of a much lower price not just a $10 discount, I guess it was just wishful thinking!

Re: Pricing on Windows 7 Stinks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is more like what it MS should do....

"By comparison, Apple Inc. (AAPL) (AAPL) said in early June that upgrades to its newest operating system, called Mac OS X Snow Leopard, will cost $30."

that's actually a little misleading...Even Apple's chief software architect called (Snow Leopard) an upgrade of Leopard...a Microsoft spokesperson stated the following..."The way I look at it, its a service pack and we don't charge for service packs."

I don't know for sure but I think you can buy the full retail of Leopard for $129. I'm not 100% sure on that I guess I could google it but I know its not $300, or $174 for oem!

Newegg.com - Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate SP1 64-bit for System Builders - Operating Systems

I was right on the $129....

Mac OS X v10.5.6 Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.)

Yeah, that maybe a good way to go. Until we see how the ultimate oem shakes out...

the pre-order pricing that starts tomorrow is only for the upgrade version right?...not the full retail version?...$50 for the full versions sounds too good to be true...I don't want the upgrade version, I always prefer to do a full install

I believe upgrade only...
Here's the quote from the #1 POST...

"This time, to goose early sales and build buzz, Microsoft is cutting the price by about half for people who pre-order upgrade software for Home Premium ($50) and Professional ($100).

The sale will start Friday in the U.S., Canada and Japan, and on July 15 in the U.K., France and Germany. It will last for about two weeks, or as long as allotted copies of the software last.

People can buy the software on Microsoft's download site or at retailers including Best Buy Co. (BBY) Inc., which said it is limiting sales to three per customer."
