Windows 7 Is Quickly Displacing Vista -- But Not XP

Windows 7 is surging. After an insanely popular beta cycle, Microsoft's latest and greatest has exploded out of the gate, grabbing more than 4 percent of the real-world usage base as tracked by InfoWorld's Windows Pulse service -- after only a few weeks of general availability.... There seems to be a direct correlation between Windows 7 adoption and Vista abandonment, with the latter losing a percentage point and the former gaining the same in a little over a week... with XP holding steady at just under 64 percent.

Interesting article. Good to know that Win7 takes advantage of multi core/threaded cpus than it's predecessors.

Thanks ctal

Almost everyone using XP are waiting for M$ to reduce the price to a reasonable amount before buying.

Me too.
MS is offering 50% discount for a copy of Win7 when you buy a new pc. I know I have more than 3 pcs. Why not a discount for more than 3 pcs.

Re: Windows 7 Is Quickly Displacing Vista -- But Not XP

Family Pack Upgrade...

$150 for three upgrade licenses and includes the media for 32 or 64 bit.

$50 a computer seems fairly resonable to me.

It's Win 7 Home Premium.

Get Windows 7 for the whole family for $149.99.

They are only going to offer this price for a while and I see amazon has already jumped their price for it way up.

I got one from Costco the other day and used one of the licenses to upgrade my wife's machine----worked like a charm.....

Re: Windows 7 Is Quickly Displacing Vista -- But Not XP

John,
The 3 computer deal works well if you have 3 computers but if you only have one computer then M$ does not have a deal for you and I suppose that there are a lot of users who do not have multiple computers and thats why M$ is not getting many XP sales. If they do anything it will not occur until after the holiday season.

Re: Windows 7 Is Quickly Displacing Vista -- But Not XP

Yeah, allot of people were burned by the cost of Vista. I suspect that allot of Win7's sales have been do to new computer purchases by consumers - where the OS is 'free' (i.e., included in the price).

There remain many consumers who see no need to upgrade and corporate adoption is slow at this point. Many companies have new guidelines for what is considered critical infrastructure vs that which is beneficial, but not critical; and cost figures into to that to some degree.

Good point, I suspect that corporations might start ramping up Win7 licensing buys under the 'use it or lose it' theory of departmental economics. Then again, they may wait because of the economy and wanting to see how other corporations make out with their Win7 roll outs.

Some degree???

In this economy?

Whatever OS is currently installed, I'm sure it runs the email, the web pages, the typing apps, and all the financial apps the company needs.

What is there in win7 that a corporation really needs? DX11? The new media system? I haven't seen anything really needed in an OS since win2000. XP took some things away that I used.

Most of the advantage on the corporate side is better integration with newer servers. Better deployment tools, better manageability, etc. (or so I'm told).

XP is already very corporate friendly, though. And, it works well; and is proven.

Don't get me wrong. As a geek, I LOVE Win7. But, I'll wait until at least SP2 before I "sell" it to my org.

Re: Windows 7 Is Quickly Displacing Vista -- But Not XP

Win 7 is better than Vista. No bloat. But on the same hardware that has been configured for XP. XP runs better than win7. To run win7 at the same performance level you need a better video card ( more memory and faster). Need more system memory . If you have single core less than 3.0GHz it maybe a little lazy.

Re: Windows 7 Is Quickly Displacing Vista -- But Not XP

Win7 still seems bloated to me - start up memory usage (w/internet security etc.) seems to be approximately the same.
