| AMD Splits! Advanced Micro Devices said Tuesday that it would split into two companies — one focused on designing microprocessors and the other on the costly business of manufacturing them — in a drastic effort to maintain its position as the only real rival to Intel. In addition, the company said two Abu Dhabi investment firms would inject at least $6 billion into the two firms, mostly to finance a new chip factory that A.M.D. planned to build near Albany, N.Y., and to upgrade one of the company’s existing plants in Dresden, Germany. http://www.nytimes.com/2008/10/07/te...gy/07chip.html

| Re: AMD Splits! Yes, WOW! AMD found a White Knight - lucky for them that oil prices when sky high for a while. I'm guessing we'll see a much more competitive AMD (on the CPU side) in another 2-3 years.

| Re: AMD Splits! Actually, doesn't the Abu Dhabi investment firms own only 20% of AMD? Though, that's probably the whole ball of wax - I think they do have a majority share of the foundry business. It doesn't matter much though, I think AMD has two fabs in Germany and will have one in NY.

| Re: AMD Splits! It's Advanced Technology that's putting up the $6 billion. The story claims another company, The Mubadala Development Company ( also from Abu Dhabi) already has 20% of the parent.

| Re: AMD Splits! This may have been mentioned before but the problem AMD has revolves around the fact that AMD's x86 license it has with Intel has a clause in it that states the contract is void if anyone buys AMD out. If this were not the case IBM would have purchased AMD out right years ago. The reason IBM would have purshased AMD is IBM does not have a license to make x86 cpu's. If you did not already know IBM hates Intel. Intel was very smart if you ask me. If this was not for the clause in the license AMD aka IBM would have become the top dog.
