| Best Metal song evar? I have to put my vote in for Death in Fire by Amon Amarth. A close second is Reining Blood by Slayer. Thoughts?

| Re: Best Metal song evar? My tastes go more towards A Secret Place by Megadeth. (Not saying this is the best metal song, just where my tastes lie.) This song really grabs me. Also Reckoning Day and Train of Consequences. Yeah, I like Megadeth.

| Re: Best Metal song evar? I'd probably go with something off Puppets or Justice by Metallica or a Mastodon song (Colony of Birchmen is pretty superb). Right now, anyway. After being exposed to Brann Dailor's drumming for a long period of time I find most metal tracks with uninspired straightforward fill-free drumming severely boring. I love prog-y/math-y metal (e.g. Capillarian Crest). I also expect greatness from Krallice. Mostly because it's Mick Barr who's wielding the axe. Avant metal genius, that man.

| Re: Best Metal song evar? Geez, where to begin? trust by megadeth is a good start. hallowed be thy name by iron maiden, master of puppets by metallica, season in the abyss and expendable youth by slayer....the list is endless really. If I really had to pick a best ever it would be master of puppets, great rythm and lyrics there. |

When I look back on the great drummers of rock (and there are so many) like Keith Moon, Ginger Baker, Neil Pert and John Bonham I have to ask: what happened to drummers after the 1970's? And I'm not even taking into account all the players in prog rock or fusion... I'll have to check out Mastodon. I've never listened to them...love the name.

| Re: Best Metal song evar? TQ, definitely check out Mastodon. They're great in that they have a unbelievably great drummer, great guitarists (one is banjo-schooled and brings that type of chops to metal guitar) and a great bass player. You can't go wrong with Leviathan or Blood Mountain. The two latest albums are top notch. The earlier stuff is good too, but a little rougher and less refined.

| Re: Best Metal song evar? Mastodon, ouch! The lead singers voice is not for me. Makes my throat hurt. Most speed metal is also not for me. IMO the music it self dictates the speed. The music it self must determine the speed not the other way a round. Scream as loud as you can and over speed as much as possible just does not cut it for me. I would say one of the best metal songs ever would be Dream Theaters "The Mirror" off the Awake album. IMO Dream Theater is possibly the most balanced band in music history as nothing is down in the mix and there are no weak links. For people that have never heard of them here is a instrumental compilation of some of their best work. http://teamrfh.com/wonder/Instrumedley.avi Other favorites of mine are, Symphony X, Vanden Plas, Fates Warning, Type O Negative.

| Re: Best Metal song evar? I'm sure I couldn't pick the best metal song "evar", but I think if any one band's song deserves such an attribution, it would have to be a Black Sabbath song from their Paranoid album. Although, they are not my favorite band (I'd probably say Metallica) they are recognizably one of the greatest, if not the greatest, influence on all the metal bands that I love. Black Sabbath - Paranoid Other Favorites: Metallica - To Live is To Die Pantera - I'm Broken In Flames - Take This Life

And talking of best metal ever, that's really hard to generalize. My personal favs are probably "Disposable Heroes" and "Master of Puppets" on said album by Metallica, and "Mouth for War" or "5 Minutes Alone" by Pantera. Of course none of these would even be possible without standing on the shoulders of such legends as Black Sabbath, etc...

| Re: Best Metal song evar? Stain of Mind - Slayer Most would think at the age of 46 I am too old to be a metal fan. Growing up in the 70's kinda helped my influences. While I enjoyed some of the music of the day ( Zep, The Who, ELP, Jethro Tull and the like ) I was missing something. I started drawing closer to Balck Sabbath, BOC, Judas Priest, Budgie and Venom. The darker the better! Did not make alot of my friends happy. I also played guitar alot back then, bands played the same ol' poop and it got to be a chore. Metal as I was to know it appealed to me. I could play fast AND loud and most of the audience appreciated that. While I do find some of the " speed metal " entertaining most of it lacks substance IMO. Say what you will about the generation I grew up with but we did have the balls to invent metal!

| Re: Best Metal song evar? Best metal song ever....tough question. I look at it in catagories. 1. Best popular metal song - Likely something by AC/DC such as Back in Black, or For Those About to Rock 2. Best speed metal song- Ace of Spades- Motorhead 3. Favorite obscure metal song- Smooth Up in Ya - Bullet Boys 4 Favorite Glam metal song - Motley Crue- Kick Start My Heart |
