Columbia sportswear competitors...HELP!

i am trying to research for a group project and i am coming up with nothing my school has access to large databases that are thus far totally useless.

I need to find out who their competitors are and some fiscal information about them.

so far what i have found out is columbia (just went public 7 years ago btw) are mostly private companies or are owned by a large corporation that owns many different companies. example The North Face is owned by VF Corporation and i can't find much info, although i did find a little bit about them.

ideas? the librarians are useless too as i spent 3 hours at the library the other day and didn't find anything.

I know the store EMS (Eastern Mountain Sports) has their own line of clothing that competes directly with Columbia. You may be able to find out some stuff from their website, they're pretty big here in the Northeast.

You could try Hoovers (edit: I think it's a subscription, but it may give you a starting point).

FB, I own a bunch of Columbia's outerwear...they're one of if not the largest outdoor sports wear mfgs in the business today...Some of their competitors are Northface, Timberline, Great Outdoor Clothing, Inc., North Ridge, just do a Google search on "Outdoor Clothing Manufacturers" and you've got their competition.

There's also some executive bio's of the company on their website and now that they're public you can research their stock on the internet. Somewhere they have a company prospectus published that should give you the fianancial info you need. A quick Google search showed me that their stock was part of a number of mutual funds.

Hope this helps you

i have found some competitor brands, but the problem is they are owned by larger companies and they don't list the financial data for the smaller segments

i'll look, but another problem is i need the data just for their outdoorwear, not all their clothing.

i really hate my group, they didn't want to listen to me and do something easy like Wal-mart or GM

All the info you need should be in the companies 10-k's. You can get them here http://www.sec.gov/edgar/searchedgar/companysearch.html

I've read a lot of 10-k and 8-k forms and most companies do break down earnings by sector. Like for example Sears would list revenues from automotive, apparel, tools, etc.. There are also lengthy descriptions of the company and many times lists of competitors.

It may be well outside your mandate, but one of their principal competitors in Canada is Mountain Equipment Co-op (MEC). They compete directly with Columbia in the U.S. though as MEC's products can be shipped to the U.S.

They are very, very big here but what makes them different is they are a co-operative, owned by their members. To buy anything in their store or online, you have to buy a $5 share. My brother owns one and I do too so that I can get him gifts from them online.

I'm not sure if you can buy more shares but it's an interesting business model.

Despite "owning" the company, I'd say that the products aren't any cheaper than Columbia. In fact, they can be signifiantly more expensive. MEC makes and imports some very "pro" equipment.

REI is a company similar to that here in the States. They are not quite nationwide, but in many larger states.
If you pay a membership fee, you get a discount on your purchases and, I think, a rebate at the end of the year

Outdoor wear? I ski a lot so I see products like Columbia, Moutain Wear, EMS, Spyder, Couloir, North Face, Oakley, Marmot, Patagonia. Stuff like that. Hope this is something that helps.
